Job description

Job purpose

The Material Handler Supervisor is a hands-on leadership role responsible for supervising a team of up to 10–15 material handlers. This role ensures the safe, accurate, and efficient storage, segregation, and movement of raw materials to support continuous production.

The position requires active floor leadership-working side-by-side with the team while coordinating closely with Production, Shipping, Inventory Control, and Fleet to maintain consistent material flow and minimize downtime. Success in this fast-paced environment requires quick decision-making, strong time management, and the ability to set the pace for a performance-driven team.

Duties and responsibilities

· Lead, schedule, and support a team of material handlers across three shifts

· Participate in hiring, onboarding, scheduling, and performance evaluations of material handling staff

· Provide on-floor leadership by actively participating in receiving, staging, storing, and transferring raw and finished goods

· Ensure proper inspection, documentation, and escalation of material quality or damage issues

· Maintain organized, accurate storage systems following FEFO and other inventory control practices

· Coordinate timely material movement to and from production based on schedules and demand

· Oversee the delivery of finished goods to shipping and outbound staging areas

· Partner with Inventory Control to resolve discrepancies and ensure inventory accuracy

· Work with Fleet to schedule and execute inter-facility material transfers

· Track material flow and troubleshoot shortages, delays, or misroutes in real-time

· Enforce company safety protocols and handling procedures to maintain a clean, compliant work environment

· Train and coach team members on SOPs, equipment use, and safety practices

· Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and team productivity

· Maintain accurate records, logs, and system entries for all material handling activities

· Ensure compliance with food safety standards and company safety culture

· Perform other duties and special projects as assigned

Qualifications

· 5+ years of experience in warehouse supervision or material handling leadership

· 3+ years of forklift operation experience (sit-down and stand-up reach trucks)

· Strong understanding of material flow, storage systems, and inventory documentation practices

· Experience leading cross-site teams and working across rotating shifts

· Proven ability to train, coach, and develop team members

· Skilled in time management, prioritization, and team coordination in high-pressure environments

· Excellent attention to detail and commitment to organizational accuracy

· Effective verbal and written communication skills; able to coordinate across departments (Production, QA, Procurement, Logistics)

· Familiarity with ERP and/or Warehouse Management Systems (WMS)

· Ability to work independently and make decisions without close supervision

· Flexible schedule with availability for early mornings, evenings, and weekends as needed

Working conditions

· Must be willing to work a flexible schedule: other shifts, weekends, holidays as required

· Must be able to work overtime as necessary, including Holidays and/or weekends as required

Physical requirements

· Preshift stretch and exercises to be performed

· Hair restraint, beard net (if needed), Safety gloves where warranted and non-slip shoes

· Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and operate material handling equipment
