Job summary

Specialty Building Products is seeking a Material Handler to join our wood and building materials yard. This role is critical for safely moving lumber, inspecting products, and maintaining accurate stock records. The candidate will operate forklifts and yard equipment and ensure a clean, hazard-free work area.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
• Prior lumber yard, warehouse, or material handling experience preferred.
• Lift up to 50 lbs and work in varying weather conditions.
• Ability to operate forklift, table saws, chainsaws, etc.
• Understand lumber grades and safety regulations.
• Strong teamwork and communication in a fast paced environment.
• Basic math and analytical skills; computer literacy (Word/Excel/Outlook).
• Self-starter and proactive with initiative.

Responsibilities

• Safely pick up, move, stack lumber and materials using forklifts, pallet jacks or hand tools.
• Inspect lumber for defects, sort by grade/size, and stack for shipping.
• Record incoming/outgoing quantities and maintain stock records.
• Ensure materials meet quality standards and verify deliveries vs. PO.
• Operate and maintain yard equipment; follow maintenance logs.
• Keep yards and storage areas clean, organized, and hazard-free.
• Follow safety procedures and wear PPE; report hazards.
• Coordinate with truck drivers and warehouse staff for smooth operations.

Job description

We are currently looking for a Material Handler to join our VALUES based organization.

Mid Shift: 3pm - 12am

Pay Rate: $19/hr.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

• Material Handling: Safely pick up, move, stack, and load/unload lumber, timbers, and other building materials using forklifts, pallet jacks, or hand tools
• Sorting & Stacking: Inspect lumber for defects, sort by grade/size, and stack on pallets or trucks for shipping
• Inventory Control: Record incoming/outgoing quantities, label products, and maintain accurate stock records
• Quality Assurance: Ensure materials meet quality standards; verify deliveries match purchase orders
• Equipment Operation: Operate and maintain forklifts, pallet jacks, and other yard equipment; follow maintenance logs
• Work Area Maintenance: Keep yards and storage areas clean, organized, and hazard-free
• Safety Compliance: Follow all safety procedures, wear required PPE (gloves, goggles, steel-toe boots), and report hazards
• Team Coordination: Communicate with truck drivers, warehouse staff, to ensure smooth operations
• Soft Skills: Teamwork, attention to detail, communication, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment

Qualifications:

• High School: Diploma or equivalent
• Experience: Prior lumber yard, warehouse, or material handling experience preferred
• Physical Ability: Lift up to 50 lbs, climb, kneel, reach, and bend; work in varying weather conditions
• Equipment Skills: Ability to operate a forklift, table saws, chainsaws, etc.
• Knowledge: Understanding of lumber grades, safety regulations
• Soft Skills: Teamwork, attention to detail, communication, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment
• Math: Must have basic math and analytical skills
• Computers: Must be computer literate, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
• Applicant: Self-starter, pro-active and able to take initiative
