GENERAL PURPOSE

The Material Handler/Backup CDL Driver is primarily responsible for receiving, storing, moving, and tracking raw materials and finished goods within the warehouse and manufacturing facility. This position supports efficient production flow through safe and accurate material handling practices.

In addition, this position serves as a backup shuttle driver, transporting materials and finished goods between the Morganton Warehouse and Hildebran Manufacturing Facility using a tractor-trailer when the primary driver is unavailable. The driving function is performed on an as-needed basis, with the majority of work time dedicated to warehouse material handling activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Material Handling Responsibilities (Primary Function)

  • Receive, inspect, store, pull, stage, and transport raw materials and finished goods throughout the facility.
  • Load and unload materials safely and efficiently using forklifts and other material handling equipment.
  • Maintain accurate inventory transactions and part tracking using company systems and procedures.
  • Deliver materials to production areas to support customer demand and manufacturing schedules.
  • Perform cycle counts and assist with inventory accuracy initiatives.
  • Ensure all warehouse activities are completed safely, accurately, and in a timely manner.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe warehouse environment.
  • Cross-train in other operational areas as needed to support business objectives.

Backup CDL Driver Responsibilities (As Needed)

  • Operate a company tractor-trailer to shuttle materials and finished goods between the Morganton Warehouse and Hildebran Manufacturing Facility.
  • Conduct required pre-trip, post-trip, and vehicle inspections in accordance with DOT and company requirements.
  • Secure loads and ensure safe transportation of products.
  • Maintain driver logs and required transportation documentation.
  • Comply with all DOT regulations, company policies, and safe driving practices.
  • Immediately report vehicle maintenance concerns, accidents, incidents, or traffic violations.
  • Serve as backup driver during planned and unplanned absences of the primary shuttle driver.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned to support operational and business objectives.
  • Follow standard work methods and safety procedures at all times.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience

One of the following is required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED), or
  • Relevant work experience demonstrating the skills and competencies necessary to perform the position.
Licenses and Certifications

Required:

  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL-A).
  • Acceptable motor vehicle record meeting company insurance requirements.
  • Ability to successfully complete company driver qualification requirements.

Preferred:

  • Previous warehouse, distribution, logistics, or manufacturing material handling experience.
  • Forklift certification or ability to become certified.
Skills and Abilities
  • Competent in basic math skills including counting, addition, subtraction, and inventory transactions.
  • Ability to operate forklifts and other material handling equipment safely.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and inventory accuracy.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to work in a changing environment.
  • Knowledge of DOT regulations and safe commercial driving practices.
  • Ability to safely operate a tractor-trailer in varying weather and traffic conditions.
  • Ability to complete required inspections, documentation, and transportation records accurately.
  • Strong commitment to safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism while interacting with internal customers and operations personnel.

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, reach, grasp, push, pull, and use hands for material handling activities throughout the shift.
  • Frequently lift, move, and carry materials weighing up to 60 pounds.
  • Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, and other warehouse equipment.
  • Ability to enter and exit a tractor-trailer cab safely and repeatedly when performing driving duties.
  • Required to sit for extended periods while operating a commercial vehicle during shuttle runs.
  • Specific vision abilities include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to hear, communicate, and see with or without correction.
  • Must be able to perform all essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
