Job description

PURPOSE: Part-time seasonal position provides Materials Handling support to the U.S. Naval Academy warehouse operations in Annapolis, Maryland.


DESCRIPTION: Performs physical tasks to transport or store materials or merchandise in accordance with NAVSUP (Naval Supply) SOP. Duties involve one or more of the following: manually loading or unloading cars, trucks, or other transporting vehicles; unpacking, shelving, or placing items in proper storage locations; or transporting goods by hand truck, carts or powered forklift.


DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Load and unload items and equipment from vehicles and other materials handling equipment and place the items in designated locations.
  • Assist with lifting, carrying, repositioning and placing items in designated locations.
  • Pick up equipment from one location and deliver it to another designated location.
  • Assist with planned movements of cruise boxes, equipment, including computers, office equipment and furniture from one location to another.
  • Package equipment for delivery in a manner that is generally accepted to ensure delivery without loss or damage.
  • Ensure that all shipments that originate from the warehouse by means of commercial delivery firms and packaged in accordance with the requirements of the shipper, including correctly filling out the shipping documents.
  • Maintains an acceptable driving record, and immediately informs supervisor and V.P. of Human Resources of any changes to record.
  • Adheres to all agency policies governing safety, discrimination/harassment, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the agency's Human Rights plan.
  • Effectively works with volunteers / interns in the business unit to achieve the mission of the organization while providing a meaningful opportunities for the volunteer(s) / intern(s) to contribute in a manner they find rewarding. Treating volunteers & interns as valuable members of the SOAR365 team.
  • Other duties as assigned.

JOB KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS: (*Essential Functions)

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for positive and clear interaction with managers and employees and for completion of documentation in a timely/accurate manner.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to persuade and motivate other and invoke a positive work atmosphere.
  • Adequate mathematical skills.
  • *Ability to lift up to 100 pounds.
  • *Ability to do repetitious bending at the waist and kneeling.
  • Computer literate; ability to perform necessary computer tasks on current agency computer programs; ability to complete required training for new programs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various warehouse and office related equipment, such as, but not limited to, forklifts (manual and powered), hand carts, personal computer, calculator, copier and fax machine. Significant standing, walking, and moving required in the performance of duties. Must be able to lift up to 100 lbs. and travel to the field (outside of the office) in order to conduct business at various locations.


REPORTING RELATIONSHIP(S): Reports directly to the Material Expediter.


EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: High School Diploma or equivalent. Minimum 2 years experience in materials handling or similar field.
