Job summary

Weir Minerals is seeking a skilled pattern and tooling professional for our onsite Florida facility. You will construct patterns, interpret engineering drawings, and perform quality inspections to ensure precise castings aligned with production needs.

The role emphasizes safe operation of shop machinery, reliable tooling maintenance, and close collaboration with engineering teams to support efficient production and ongoing improvements.

Qualifications

  • Extensive experience with precision woodworking, lamination, and safe shop operations.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints and 3D CAD schematics.
  • Proficiency in foundry mathematics including dimensions, draft angles and shrink allowances.
  • Strong background in quality inspection using precision measuring instruments.

Responsibilities

  • Pattern Construction: select, cure, laminate wood stocks; sculpt patterns and core boxes for castings.
  • Blueprint Interpretation: read complex schematics and CAD models to determine dimensions and tolerances.
  • Quality Control: perform dimensional inspections to ensure patterns meet specs within tight tolerances.
  • Tooling Maintenance: inspect and modify patterns and tooling to extend lifespan and support changes.
  • Production Support: set up pattern equipment and manage pattern changes for production runs.
  • Travel Requirements: minimal travel; primarily onsite in the Florida facility.

What You’ll Do
  • Pattern Construction: Skillfully select, cure, and laminate wood stocks, then use hand tools and precision machinery to sculpt highly accurate, durable patterns and core boxes that serve as the foundation for industrial castings.
  • Blueprint Interpretation: Analyze complex engineering schematics and 3D CAD models daily to calculate precise dimensions, shrink allowances, and draft angles essential for successful casting extraction.
  • Quality Control: Perform rigorous dimensional inspections using calipers, micrometers, and templates to ensure patterns meet exact engineering specifications within strict tolerances before production.
  • Tooling Maintenance: Inspect, repair, and modify existing patterns and tooling to extend their lifespan and accommodate engineering changes, ensuring continuous production efficiency.
  • Production Support: Build, mount, rig, and set up pattern equipment, perform pattern changes for production runs, and ensure timely preparation of patterns according to production schedules.
  • Safety First: Demonstrate 100% commitment to our zero harm behaviors in support of our drive towards developing a world-class safety culture.
  • Travel Requirements: Minimal travel expected; primarily onsite work in the Candler, Florida facility.
What You’ll Bring
Must-haves
  • Extensive experience in precision woodworking, lamination, and safe operation of shop machinery and hand tools.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, blueprints, and 3D CAD schematics.
  • Proficiency in foundry mathematics including calculating dimensions, draft angles, and metal shrink allowances.
  • Solid background in quality inspection using precision measuring instruments to verify tight tolerances.
Nice-to-haves
  • Experience with 3D modeling software such as SolidWorks and CAM software like CamWorks or NX CAM.
  • Understanding of foundry processes and casting techniques.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
