Job summary

ICES: Data, Discovery, Better Health seeks an experienced Master of Towing Vessels to operate and lead tug operations in San Francisco Bay and surrounding waters. A confident mariner with local knowledge and strong crew leadership is essential for regulatory compliance and operational excellence.

The role requires hands-on management of towing operations, training, safety drills, and coordination with shoreside teams to maintain vessel readiness and client satisfaction.

Qualifications

• Valid USCG Master of Towing Vessels license (Near Coastal or Oceans preferred).
• Proven proficiency in barge handling, ship assist, and wire towing.
• Strong working knowledge of San Francisco Bay and/or West Coast towing operations.
• TWIC card and current USCG Medical Certificate.
• Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work flexible shifts, including nights, weekends, and emergency call-outs.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the operator-in-charge of towing vessels, conducting marine construction support, ship stores deliveries, and offshore towing
• Lead and manage onboard crew operations, including training, safety drills, and work assignments
• Conduct routine inspections of vessel systems and coordinate maintenance needs with shoreside personnel
• Ensure compliance with all USCG, company, and environmental regulations
• Complete required logs, reports, and documentation accurately and timely
• Communicate effectively with dispatch, port captains, and clients
