Job summary

Broken Arrow Public Schools seeks a Master Mechanic in the Transportation department to inspect, diagnose, repair and maintain a diverse fleet of school buses and support vehicles. This Full-Time, 12-month position requires a high school diploma or GED, CDL Class B with school endorsements, and SDE certification.

Minimum 3 years of bus/truck repair experience is expected, with 1 year in school bus transportation preferred. ASE certification and state inspector credentials are highly valued.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; ASE certification preferred; heavy diesel training from accredited college or trade school preferred; Class B Driver's License with Passenger and School Bus Endorsements required; State school bus inspector certification required.
• Experience: minimum 3 years in bus or medium/light duty truck repair and maintenance; at least 1 year in school bus transportation industry preferred.
• Skills: Valid CDL Class B with air brake, passenger, and school endorsements; SDE school bus certification; knowledge in all aspects of bus and truck repair and maintenance; able to read, write and communicate in English.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose and repair mechanical problems and communicate possible solutions; maintain diesel and gasoline vehicles and equipment.
• Services, repairs, overhauls and tests vehicles and all component parts and systems.
• Rotates, aligns, and balances wheels.
• Repairs and replaces damaged vehicle body parts.
• Tests electrical systems and makes necessary repairs.
• Repairs carburetors, ignition systems, and electrical components.
• Checks and repairs doors and lifts.

• Follows all rules, policies and procedures of Broken Arrow Public Schools,along with regulations pertaining to the Transportation Department.
• Diagnoses and repairs mechanical problems and communicates possible solutions. Maintains diesel and gasoline vehicles and equipment.

• .Removes, replaces, and reassembles transmissions and clutches, fuel, oil, and water pumps, generators, and other parts of the engine and suspension system.
• Performs general maintenance as needed.
• Installs rings and bearings, and ensures proper adjustment.
• Tunes motors using standard testing equipment.
• Refaces brakes drums and realigns brakes.
• Lays out and fabricates parts.
• Performs duties and responsibilities as requested by the Transportation Director or designee.
• Performs fifteen (15) hours of continuing education every two (2) years.
• Drives a school bus route based on operational need.

Attendance Statement:

Able to be in attendance for assigned responsibilities with 95% attendance.

Environmental Conditions:

Exposure to extremes of heat and cold. Expected to safely handle assigned vehicle in any

weather conditions and on varying road surfaces.

Physical Standards:

• Ability to manipulate objects of up to 50 lbs for 20 feet is required
• Must pass DOT physical and Drug Screening
• Walking as required to access equipment and perform responsibilities
• Sitting for length of assigned route
• Use of hands and arms to assist with wheelchairs, setting brakes, foot pedals, etc.
• Climbing and descending bus steps
