The University of Virginia is hiring a Master Maintenance Technician to ensure effective maintenance services within its Housing Zone. Responsibilities include troubleshooting and repairing systems in HVAC, plumbing, and electrical trades, along with mentoring junior staff. The role requires a journeyman license and offers competitive hourly pay and benefits.
Facilities Management at the University of Virginia is seeking a Master Maintenance Technician to support weekend operations within the Housing Zone. This role is essential to ensuring reliable, cost-effective maintenance services for Housing & Residential Life (HRL) facilities, which include 7,000 beds across 180 buildings and over 3 million square feet of occupied space. Our portfolio includes single-family homes, residence halls, and apartments.
This position serves as the primary point of contact for reactive and emergent maintenance needs throughout the weekend and plays a key leadership role within the zone.
Master Maintenance Technicians are senior-level professionals who hold a journeyman license in at least one building trade and bring a minimum of four additional years of experience in a second trade. Responsibilities include advanced troubleshooting, repairs, and preventative maintenance across a wide range of building systems, such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, access control, and life safety systems. The technician is expected to work independently, mentor less experienced staff, and help ensure consistent service quality and operational efficiency across Grounds.
Facilities Management (FM) supports the University of Virginia's wide range of research, academic and patient care programs. With over 1,100 employees dedicated to excellence, Facilities Management is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair, and maintenance of UVA's buildings, infrastructure, and grounds as well as other University-owned and leased properties.
Shift Schedule (4-day workweek):
Friday: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
Saturday: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM (earns shift differential pay)
Sunday: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM (earns shift differential pay)
Monday: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
Duties Include:
Perform installation, repair, and maintenance across multiple trades (HVAC, plumbing, electrical) in accordance with technical diagrams and procedures.
Independently respond to service requests and emergency calls across Housing properties.
Diagnose complex maintenance issues and implement effective, long-term solutions with minimal disruption.
Balance preventive maintenance schedules and urgent service needs.
Coach and mentor junior technicians, supporting their technical development.
Maintain accurate work logs, provide shift-to-shift handoffs, and update supervisors as needed.
Communicate job status and expected timelines to customers clearly and professionally.
Enforce and promote safety practices per OSHA, federal, state, and local standards.
Record work activity in the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) and complete timecards accurately.
Attend required safety and skills training.
Use all required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Stay current on university policies, sustainability efforts, and evolving technologies (e.g., smart building systems).
Maintain a courteous and respectful demeanor in diverse campus environments, including historic or high-profile locations.
Required Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience: A minimum of 4 years of journeyman level experience in HVAC, electrical or plumbing trades, plus journeyman level experience in at least one other trade.
Licensure: Journeyman level license in at least one trade; Valid Driver's license with zero or positive points balance and at least 2 years of driving experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Journeyman level license in more than one trade
Anticipated Compensation: $36 - $40 per hour ($74,880 - $83,200 annually), commensurate with experience and qualifications. This position is eligible for additional shift differential pay of $2 per hour.

For this position, the selected candidate will need to complete the required background checks prior to the start date of the position.
Physical Demands: Employee must be able to variously sit, stand, walk, climb stairs and ladders, crawl, stoop, bend, squat, lift, pull, and use both hands-on repetitive tasks (including overhead tasks). Employee must have normal vision and hearing (correctable), and for some areas of employment, color vision and sense of smell.
