Why This Role Is Different
You will be the marketing function — not part of a large department. Working directly with leadership across all three companies, you will own strategy and execution across publishing, distribution, and live events. This role calls for someone who is equally comfortable with a strategy deck and a design brief. While a modest budget exists for outside freelancers and photographers, you will handle a significant portion of creative production yourself, including writing copy and building graphics and social assets directly in Canva. If you take pride in both the thinking and the making, you will thrive here.
What You'll Do
Publishing & Product Marketing (Mixed Media Resources)
- Plan and execute marketing campaigns for 18–20 titles per year, driving awareness, preorders, and sell-through across consumer and trade channels
- Research target demographics to reach new audiences and deepen engagement with existing ones
- Advise authors and designers on leveraging their own platforms to amplify campaigns and drive early buzz
- Serve as the primary marketing contact for authors, editors, sales, and distribution partners throughout the publishing cycle
- Manage marketing budgets (including Meta ads), oversee creation of marketing materials, and coordinate advance copy outreach, influencer mailings, and giveaways
Distribution & Retail Marketing (West Broadway Distribution Services)
- Develop marketing collateral to grow our book distribution program into new and existing retail accounts
- Lead the rebuild and ongoing management of the West Broadway Distribution Services website
Events Marketing (SOHO Publishing Company)
- Lead all marketing for Vogue Knitting Live — email campaigns, social promotion, and attendee acquisition — from announcement through post-event follow-up
Cross-Company Responsibilities
- Own social media across all three companies: write all content, manage posting cadence, and oversee creation of visual assets using Canva
- Manage Mailchimp email programs, including list management, segmentation, automation, and performance optimization
- Hire and manage outside freelancers within a modest budget, while personally handling a significant portion of creative production
- Track and report on KPIs including click-through rates, email open rates, and conversion; run A/B tests and continuously optimize
- Leverage AI and automation tools to improve efficiency, personalization, and targeting
What You'll Bring
- 5+ years of marketing experience in book publishing, media, crafts, lifestyle, or a comparable content-driven industry
- Proven ability to work independently as both a creative and analytical thinker — you can concept a campaign, build assets in Canva, write the copy, and measure whether it worked
- Experience managing end-to-end campaigns across multiple projects simultaneously, with strong organizational skills and follow-through
- Deep understanding of social media strategy, with demonstrated experience writing content and managing posting schedules across multiple accounts
- Hands-on Mailchimp experience including segmentation, automation, and analytics; experience with influencer marketing and digital advertising a plus
- Advanced proficiency in Canva; able to independently produce polished graphics, social assets, and marketing collateral
- Experience identifying, hiring, and managing freelance creative talent within a lean budget
- Strong communicator who can adapt to a wide range of audiences, from craft authors to major retail buyers
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
- A genuine connection to the craft, fiber arts, book publishing, or art world
- Proactive and collaborative, with a self-starter mindset — you will thrive in a small team where initiative and ownership matter
