Job description

About the Organization

More Than Words (MTW) is a nonprofit social enterprise that empowers youth who are in the foster care system, court involved, homeless, or out of school to take charge of their lives by taking charge of a business. By working as a team to manage their own retail and online used book business and community space, youth develop the employment skills, leadership, and self-confidence they need to successfully transition to adulthood.

MTW is an exemplary organization that has continually held up a mirror to identify areas for improvement and accountability; that ethic is part of the culture and fabric of MTW and it extends to our commitment to ensure our staff and board reflect the racial and ethnic diversity and lived experiences of the young adults we are privileged to serve. People of color are highly encouraged to apply.

This hands-on alumni position will focus on day-to-day social engagement, capturing authentic content across MTW spaces, promoting the growing chain of Boomerangs thrift stores, identifying and building relationships with local influencers, and coordinating influencer visits at our sites. The role reports to the Director of Marketing and New Business and works closely with site staff to gather timely, compelling content.

  • Identify timely opportunities for MTW and Boomerangs to participate in local conversations, trends, and community moments
  • Flag sensitive, complex, or customer-service-related messages for review and support appropriate follow-up
  • Content Capture Across MTW Sites:
  • Regularly visit and coordinate with MTW and Boomerangs locations in Boston, Cambridge, and Waltham to capture raw photo and video content
  • Gather authentic, on-the-ground content featuring store merchandise, sales, displays, events, donations, behind-the-scenes activity, community partnerships, and organizational updates
  • Capture vertical video and informal content that can be used for Instagram and Facebook Stories, Reels, short-form videos, and other social posts
  • Organize, label, and upload raw content so it is easy for the marketing team to locate, review, and use
  • Follow MTW guidelines related to youth privacy, consent, dignity, and mission-centered storytelling
Influencer Research, Outreach, and Coordination
  • Research and identify local influencers and content creators whose audiences and content align with MTW, Boomerangs, thrift, fashion, books, sustainability, community engagement, and youth impact
  • Add prospective and active influencer contacts to the marketing outreach tracker, keeping contact information, outreach status, responses, next steps, visit dates, and follow-up notes current
  • Engage thoughtfully with influencer content to build authentic relationships before and after direct outreach
  • Support outreach using approved messaging and coordinate next steps when an influencer expresses interest
  • Help schedule and prepare influencer visits at MTW sites, including confirming the location, date, time, primary contact, visit goals, and any relevant site details
  • Communicate visit information to site staff and support a welcoming, organized experience for visiting creators
  • Track resulting posts, tags, reach indicators, and follow-up opportunities when information is available
Brand and Team Support
  • Use MTW and Boomerangs brand voice and visual standards consistently across social engagement and content support
  • Collaborate with the Director of Marketing and New Business to prioritize weekly content needs, influencer outreach, and site coverage
  • Support occasional marketing projects, store promotions, events, and community-facing opportunities as assigned
  • Represent MTW professionally and respectfully when communicating online and coordinating with staff, partners, customers, and creators
Key Qualifications

  • Ability to travel among MTW sites and work independently while staying connected to the marketing team
  • Strong written communication and sound judgment when engaging publicly on behalf of an organization
  • Comfort taking photos and short videos on a smartphone, including vertical content for Stories and Reels
  • Highly organized and able to maintain an accurate outreach tracker, follow up consistently, and manage multiple priorities
  • Comfort reaching out to new people and building professional relationships online and in person
  • Familiarity with Canva, Hootsuite, basic photo/video editing, or shared content libraries is a plus
  • Motivated by the MTW mission and committed to respectful, strengths-based, and racially equitable storytelling
