  • Analyze wholesale and retail energy markets to inform dispatch strategies, program design, and value analysis
  • Support our regulatory engagement — from tracking proceedings to helping draft comments and position Octopus in front of utility commissions.
  • Turn messy, ambiguous problems into clear analysis, sharp recommendations, and actionable decks

Job description

Welcome to the future of energy

Octopus is a tech-powered energy company. We believe technology has the power to address our greatest challenge, climate change, while also delivering incredible service and customer experience.

We are changing the way people interact with their energy company - by making it approachable, low cost, easy-to-understand, and most importantly, 100% renewable.

The team you'd be joining

The Flexibility-as-a-Service (FaaS) team is Octopus's tip of the spear for the distributed energy revolution in North America. We turn distributed energy resources — home batteries, EVs, heat pumps, smart thermostats — into virtual power plants that balance the grid, earn customers money, and make room for more renewables.

We are small, we move quickly, and we're building something that doesn't really exist yet. We live at the messy, exciting intersection of wholesale markets, utility programs, regulatory policy, and commercial strategy. That means the work is varied, the priorities shift, and the opportunities show up fast — sometimes with very little notice.

The role

This is a generalist role for someone who likes wearing a lot of hats and switching between them without losing the thread.

One day you might be helping draft regulatory comments for a utility commission proceeding. The next, you're pulling apart wholesale market pricing to shape a dispatch strategy. The day after that, you're building the deck for a business development pitch or turning around an RFP response on a tight deadline. You'll move between utility business development, wholesale market analysis, energy policy, and program delivery — often in the same week.

What You'll Do
  • Help develop and win new commercial opportunities — supporting business development, partnerships, and RFP responses to utilities and government clients.

  • Support in program delivery, streamlining operational processes, and help get a new project off the ground.

  • Build the models, memos, and materials that move a deal, a program, or a policy position forward.

  • Jump into whatever the moment needs — sometimes at short notice — and help figure out the parts nobody's mapped yet.

What You'll Need
  • 3–5 years in energy, ideally somewhere near distributed energy resources, DERMS, demand flexibility, virtual power plants, wholesale markets, utilities, or energy policy. You don't need all of it — you do need to be curious about the whole picture.

  • Strong quantitative and data analysis chops. You're excellent in Excel, and you can wrangle data in Python, R, or SQL or can leverage AI proficiently to support (or you're hungry to get there).

  • An interdisciplinary brain. You can move between commercial, analytical, regulatory, and delivery work and hold the connections between them.

  • Excellent communication. You write clearly and persuasively, and you can build and deliver a compelling presentation.

  • A high tolerance for ambiguity — You're comfortable context-switching, reprioritizing on the fly, and building the plane while flying it.

  • Ownership and pace. You drive your own work forward, take responsibility from idea to delivery, and don't wait to be told what to do next.

  • A willingness to learn faster than the space moves

Bonus points for hands-on experience with utility programs, ISO/RTO markets, or regulatory proceedings — but a sharp, adaptable generalist beats a narrow specialist.

A note on how we work
  • This way of working isn't for everyone, and we want to be honest about that.

  • You might be used to places where each function sits neatly in its own box. It doesn't here. You'll see more, influence more, and occasionally deal with a bit more chaos too.

  • If you want freedom, responsibility, and the chance to put a big green dent in the world, you'll fit right in.

Why else you'll love it here
  • A seat at the table as Octopus builds its North America flexibility business from the ground up.

  • Real autonomy, real ownership, and a team that moves fast and backs each other.

  • A mission you can feel good about — accelerating the shift to a cheaper, greener grid.

  • Being a part part of one of the most impactful and disruptive climate / energy technology companies in the world

  • Salary -The expected salary range for this role is between $85,000 - $110,000 annually. Your exact compensation will be determined by your location, professional experience, and how well your unique skills align with the role's specific needs.

  • Fully paid medical, dental, andvision insurance.

  • Paid time off — we know working hard means also being able to recharge as needed, we trust our employees to get the work done and take the time they need. We offer 20 days of paid vacation and 8 paid sick days annually.

  • 401(k) plan with employer match.

  • Parental leave.Biological, adoptive and foster parents are all eligible.

  • Flexible working environment- genuine work life balance here; we treat you as a human, and do our best to make work and life merge smoothly together

  • Equity Options Scheme- you own your own part of the business, share options in the whole Octopus Energy Group so we all work together towards success

Our people are our strongest asset and the unique skills and perspectives people bring to the team are the driving force of our success.

As an equal opportunity employer, we do not discriminate on the basis of any protected attribute. Our commitment is to provide equal opportunities, an inclusive work environment, and fairness for everyone.
