Job description

Context

The Center for Green Market Activation™ (GMA) is a US-based, globally-focused nonprofit that was launched in June of 2024. Through innovative procurement approaches and demand aggregating buyers’ alliances, GMA catalyzes and scales the uptake of low- and zero-carbon goods and services in the hardest-to-abate sectors. GMA’s organizational design combines shared expertise and infrastructure with sector-specific programs. By consolidating a range of value chain (i.e. supplier) decarbonization initiatives under a single nonprofit umbrella, we help companies ramp up their value chain decarbonization efforts quickly, starting in one sector and easily moving into another.

Work/Life Balance

GMA takes work/life balance very seriously. Outside of stakeholder meetings, we will be as flexible as possible on work hours to meet your particular home life needs. Staff will be expected to work an average of 8 hours/day.

Location

Remote, contiguous United States (no AK or HI due to time zone). Applicant must currently live in and have the right to work in the United States.

Role Overview

This role will support the Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA), an official new member of the GMA family of initiatives, helping design and implement innovative procurement initiatives that accelerate deployment of low- and zero-emission technologies, including but not limited to alternative fuels.

ZEMBA is a pioneering market initiative that requires comfort working through ambiguity as markets, technologies, and accounting frameworks continue to evolve. The successful candidate will work closely with technical experts, suppliers, corporate sustainability leaders, and nonprofit partners to help advance innovative market solutions for Scope 3 decarbonization.

Core Responsibilities
  • Support the design of competitive procurement processes, including alternative fuel criteria and commercial structures.
  • Support the evaluation of proposals submitted through competitive procurement processes through review of technical information, including lifecycle assessments, sustainability certifications, emissions accounting methodologies, and fuel production pathways.
  • Coordinate procurement activities with suppliers, corporate buyers, technical experts, and external partners.
  • Provide subject matter expertise in corporate GHG accounting and climate target standards, including GHG Protocol, Science Based Targets Initiative, and International Standards Organization (ISO)
  • Conduct research and analysis on emerging fuel and propulsion technologies, policy developments in relevant geographies, and market trends.
  • Support development of technical guidance, presentations, member resources, and briefing materials.
  • Help manage complex projects across multiple internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to new initiatives that strengthen GMA’s role as a leader in market-based climate solutions.
Skills and Qualifications

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical concepts to a variety of audiences.
  • Strong collaborator who also demonstrates initiative and can independently manage workstreams with minimal oversight.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced, entrepreneurial environment.

Preferred:

  • Experience evaluating alternative fuel pathways, lifecycle assessments (LCA), or well-to-wake carbon intensities.
  • Strong understanding of LCA principles, including system boundaries, baseline selection, allocation methodologies, and carbon accounting.
  • Knowledge of alternative maritime fuels, including feedstocks, conversion technologies, and commercialization pathways.
  • Familiarity with sustainability certification systems, environmental attributes, or greenhouse gas accounting methodologies and best practices.
  • Experience working with climate or energy policy frameworks such as FuelEU Maritime, CORSIA, EU RED, or similar regulations.
  • Experience working in or with the maritime sector, particularly on climate, energy, or sustainability initiatives.
  • Experience supporting procurement processes, competitive solicitations, or market-based climate initiatives.

  • Experience with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), or corporate Scope 3 GHG accounting and decarbonization strategies.
Why Join GMA

This is an opportunity to help shape one of the fastest-growing organizations focused on market-based climate solutions. You will work alongside leading experts from industry, nonprofits, and government while helping design innovative approaches to decarbonizing some of the world’s hardest-to-abate sectors.
