Overview

We are seeking a skilled Forklift Operator to join our maritime operations team. As a Forklift Operator in the maritime industry, you will be responsible for safely and efficiently handling cargo, equipment, and supplies on docks, in warehouses, and aboard vessels. Your precision, attention to safety protocols, and ability to work effectively in a dynamic marine environment are crucial for ensuring smooth and efficient operations.


Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  1. Operate Forklifts: Safely operate various types of forklifts (e.g., counterbalance, reach trucks, container handlers) to load, unload, and transport cargo between ships, docks, and storage areas.
  2. Cargo Handling: Handle a variety of cargo types, including containers, pallets, bulk materials, and equipment, ensuring proper placement and securement according to loading plans and instructions.
  3. Safety Protocols: Adhere strictly to safety protocols and procedures to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of personnel, cargo, and equipment. Follow maritime regulations and guidelines for forklift operations.
  4. Equipment Inspection and Maintenance: Conduct pre-operational inspections of forklifts and related equipment to ensure they are in good working condition. Report any maintenance or repair needs promptly.
  5. Communication and Coordination: Communicate effectively with shore personnel, vessel crews, and other operators to coordinate cargo handling operations. Use radios, hand signals, or other communication devices as necessary.
  6. Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of cargo handling activities, including logs of operations, cargo manifests, and equipment maintenance records.
  7. Emergency Response: Respond promptly and appropriately to emergency situations or equipment malfunctions, taking corrective actions or alerting appropriate personnel.
  8. Environmental Compliance: Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and standards during cargo handling operations, including proper disposal of wastes and adherence to pollution prevention measures.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Experience: Proven experience as a Forklift Operator in a maritime or port environment.
  • Certification: Possession of valid forklift operator certification (e.g., OSHA, maritime-specific certifications).
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in operating and maneuvering various types of forklifts in tight spaces and on uneven surfaces.
  • Safety Awareness: Strong commitment to safety practices and protocols, including knowledge of maritime safety regulations.
  • Physical Fitness: Ability to perform tasks that require physical strength and endurance, often in challenging weather conditions.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work effectively as part of a team, communicating and coordinating with diverse personnel in a multicultural environment.
  • Problem Solving: Strong problem-solving skills to troubleshoot operational issues and make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Flexibility: Willingness to work rotating shifts, overtime, and weekends as required by operational needs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Additional certifications in forklift operation, rigging, or maritime operations.
  • Familiarity with cargo handling procedures in maritime or port settings.
  • Must be eligible for a TWIC card.

Working Conditions:

  • Work may be performed outdoors on docks, in warehouses, or aboard vessels, often exposed to varying weather conditions and noise levels.
  • Periodic travel and extended periods away from home may be required, depending on the nature of the maritime operations.

Scheduling:

  • Fluctuating Hours available, Rotating shifts, overtime, and nights & weekends as required by operational needs..
  • Full time, part time and project based roles available
