Job summary

Port of San Francisco is seeking a Mechanical Engineering student intern to join the Utilities team within the Engineering Division. The role offers hands-on experience with naval and building systems and supports field inspections, design documentation, and project cost estimates.

The position is a part-time, in-person internship with a temporary exempt appointment, allowing flexible scheduling to fit academic commitments and site visits at the Port’s Pier 1 Office on the San Francisco

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in Mechanical Engineering (sophomore or higher).
• Familiarity with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

• Assist with field inspection of pumps, HVAC systems, electrical systems, cranes, and other waterfront mechanical and electrical equipment.
• Contribute to engineering drawings, design concepts, and technical documentation.
• Perform real engineering calculations and help develop project cost estimates.
• Visit active construction sites and learn how a project moves from design to reality.
• Support improvements focused on sustainability, climate resilience and long-term asset reliability.
