Job summary

Job Title: Marine Technology Instructor

Retirees of the Texas Teachers Retirement System (TRS) may apply. Consistent with district policy SD-7.17 “Employment of Retirees,” selected applicants are responsible for reimbursing the district, through payroll deduction, for the current rate of all TRS pension or TRS Care surcharges. As of September 1, 2025, the TRS pension surcharge rate is 16.5% and the TRS Care surcharge is $535/month.

Position Summary:

The Marine Technology Instructor is responsible for providing classroom, laboratory, and hands‑on instruction in marine engine systems, vessel maintenance, marine electrical systems, and marine service technologies. The instructor prepares students for entry‑level employment in the marine industry by teaching industry‑recognized skills, safety procedures, and troubleshooting techniques related to marine equipment and propulsion systems.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED required.
Associate degree in Marine Technology, Marine Mechanics, Diesel Technology, Automotive Technology, or a closely related field preferred.
Minimum of five (5) years of full‑time work experience within the last ten (10) years in marine technology, marine engine repair, marine service, or a related occupation that aligns with the instructional program.
Demonstrated experience diagnosing, servicing, and repairing two‑stroke and four‑stroke marine engines.
Knowledge of marine fuel, ignition, cooling, lubrication, steering, and propulsion systems.
Industry certifications from manufacturers or recognized organizations are preferred.
Valid driver’s license and ability to meet applicable employment requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide classroom and laboratory instruction in marine technology concepts and practices.
Teach maintenance, diagnosis, troubleshooting, and repair of two‑stroke and four‑stroke marine engines.
Demonstrate proper use of marine service tools, diagnostic equipment, and testing instruments.
Instruct students in marine electrical systems, fuel systems, cooling systems, and propulsion components.
Develop lesson plans, instructional materials, and assessments aligned with program standards.
Maintain a safe learning environment and ensure compliance with safety regulations and tool‑control procedures.
Monitor student progress and maintain accurate attendance, performance, and certification records.
Prepare students for industry‑recognized certifications and employment opportunities.
Maintain laboratory equipment, tools, and instructional materials.
Collaborate with administrators, industry partners, and advisory committees to ensure program relevance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Extensive knowledge of marine engine repair and maintenance.
Ability to teach troubleshooting techniques for outboard, inboard, and marine propulsion systems.
Knowledge of marine electronics and electrical systems.
Strong communication and instructional skills.
Ability to supervise students in classroom and shop environments.
Proficiency in industry safety practices and equipment operation.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience teaching career and technical education courses.
Experience with boat rigging, marine electronics, and vessel maintenance.
Current industry certifications from marine manufacturers or professional organizations.
Experience preparing students for industry‑based certifications.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervise adult incarcerated students in classroom settings. May also supervise teacher aides.
