Job description

The Role

Sycomore is seeking marine scientists (PhD-level candidates, including students or recent graduates) who are passionate about environmental preservation, ecosystems, and real-world problem-solving. This flexible, part-time, remote role gives you the opportunity to influence, fund, and validate practical solutions to environmental challenges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advisory Leadership: Guide Sycomore on priority environmental challenges, particularly within marine and aquatic ecosystems.
  • Problem Briefing: Develop clear, compelling briefing documents that describe environmental problems requiring innovative solutions.
  • Art-Science Collaboration: Work with artists who will translate your science-based problem briefs into impactful art pieces that raise awareness and funding.
  • Global Community Engagement: Promote problem briefs to scientists, researchers, and innovators worldwide to attract proposals for solutions.
  • Solution Validation: Review, critique, and validate solution proposals submitted by other scientists and innovators.
  • Project Impact: Support the promotion and reporting of the outcomes of successfully funded projects.

How It Works

Each project follows a structured cycle:

  1. Phase 1: You prepare a detailed briefing document describing a marine environmental challenge.
  2. Phase 2: Artists create dedicated artworks based on your brief, working in collaboration with you as needed.
  3. Phase 3: Artworks are showcased on the Sycomore platform, generating funds for solution-focused campaigns.
  4. Phase 4: Scientists and innovators globally propose solutions to the problem, submitting detailed plans and budgets.
  5. Phase 5: You help Sycomore evaluate, review, and validate the most promising proposals.
  6. Phase 6: Funds are allocated to the best solution for implementation.
  7. Phase 7: You contribute to promoting the outcomes of the solution, raising further awareness of the impact.

What You’ll Earn

  • Commissioned Pay: £15k-£20k
  • Performance Bonuses: Additional bonuses of £5-£10k based on agreed project success metrics.

Example Earnings:

  • A single project generates quarterly payments of circa £200-£500.
  • Managing two projects simultaneously could earn you between £400-£1000 per quarter.
  • Successful project completion unlocks performance bonuses, rewarding your efforts in driving meaningful impact.
