The Role
Sycomore is seeking marine scientists (PhD-level candidates, including students or recent graduates) who are passionate about environmental preservation, ecosystems, and real-world problem-solving. This flexible, part-time, remote role gives you the opportunity to influence, fund, and validate practical solutions to environmental challenges.
Key Responsibilities
- Advisory Leadership: Guide Sycomore on priority environmental challenges, particularly within marine and aquatic ecosystems.
- Problem Briefing: Develop clear, compelling briefing documents that describe environmental problems requiring innovative solutions.
- Art-Science Collaboration: Work with artists who will translate your science-based problem briefs into impactful art pieces that raise awareness and funding.
- Global Community Engagement: Promote problem briefs to scientists, researchers, and innovators worldwide to attract proposals for solutions.
- Solution Validation: Review, critique, and validate solution proposals submitted by other scientists and innovators.
- Project Impact: Support the promotion and reporting of the outcomes of successfully funded projects.
How It Works
Each project follows a structured cycle:
- Phase 1: You prepare a detailed briefing document describing a marine environmental challenge.
- Phase 2: Artists create dedicated artworks based on your brief, working in collaboration with you as needed.
- Phase 3: Artworks are showcased on the Sycomore platform, generating funds for solution-focused campaigns.
- Phase 4: Scientists and innovators globally propose solutions to the problem, submitting detailed plans and budgets.
- Phase 5: You help Sycomore evaluate, review, and validate the most promising proposals.
- Phase 6: Funds are allocated to the best solution for implementation.
- Phase 7: You contribute to promoting the outcomes of the solution, raising further awareness of the impact.
What You’ll Earn
- Commissioned Pay: £15k-£20k
- Performance Bonuses: Additional bonuses of £5-£10k based on agreed project success metrics.
Example Earnings:
- A single project generates quarterly payments of circa £200-£500.
- Managing two projects simultaneously could earn you between £400-£1000 per quarter.
- Successful project completion unlocks performance bonuses, rewarding your efforts in driving meaningful impact.
