Job summary

The Delaware River and Bay Authority is seeking an OILER for Cape May, NJ. The role oversees vessel engine room operation, records logs, and supports maintenance under the Chief Engineer.

This safety-sensitive position reports to the Chief Engineer and Port Engineer for night operations and ashore duties. Requirements include US citizenship, 21+, a high school diploma or equivalent, and a QMED credential (or obtain within 120 days).

OILER

Location: Cape May-Lewes Ferry, Cape May, NJ

Salary: $34.78 per hour ($72,333 annualized)

Position Summary

The Oiler has the responsibility of overseeing vessel equipment operation, making log entries and reporting problems to the Chief Engineer. The Oiler assists with the primary level maintenance and repair of the vessels while underway. The Oiler is responsible to the Chief Engineer for engine room duties, to the Captain for emergency duties underway and to the Port Engineer when working as Night Engineer. This is a safety sensitive position both underway and ashore. Responsible for following established safety practices while performing assigned duties to protect self, co‑workers and the public from personal injury and to prevent damage to Authority property.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Responsible for the safe operation of all engines, auxiliary machinery and related systems in the motor vessels and related facilities.
• Complies with Federal Regulations 46 CFR subpart C * 15.401, * 15.405, subpart D * 15.501.
• Contributes to the safe operation of vessels and equipment.
• Responds decisively and effectively to emergency situations.
• Maintains familiarity with individual vessel characteristics.
• Assists in the engine room during vessel operation.
• Maintains responsibility for recording records including official machinery logs, and reporting data to the Chief for maintenance logs and repair requests.
• Has effective knowledge of the Engine Room Standard Operating Procedures and DRBA Facilities Operations Manual and can follow the instructions of the plans.
• Monitors machinery and auxiliary systems and equipment throughout the vessel with an eye toward early identification of problems.
• Responsible for the primary maintenance of vessel engines, auxiliary machinery and related systems while underway and ashore.
• Performs routine maintenance of machinery and systems.
• Helps diagnose malfunctions.
• Ensures cleanliness of vessel engine room and other machinery spaces.
• Performs maintenance, repair, and servicing of vessels and related machinery while scheduled ashore under the direction of the Yard Chief, and when serving as Night Engineer under the direction of the Port Engineer.
• Provides the highest level of customer service and professionalism to all internal and external customers.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Leadership ability.
• Ability to diagnose machinery malfunctions and to recommend corrective action.
• Ability to read and understand blueprints and machinery systems' technical manuals.
• Ability to provide excellent customer service.

Required Education and Experience

• Proof of U.S. citizenship.
• 21 years or older.
• High school diploma or equivalent.

Licenses, Registrations, and/or Certificates

• Valid United States Coast Guard Merchant Marine Document endorsed as Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED), or obtain this rating within 120 days of hire.
• Valid driver's licence.

Special Requirements

• Subject to a background check; a history of arrest or conviction is not an automatic disqualification for employment.
• Willing and available for duty at such hours, day or night, as may be reported to maintain continuous operation of this facility.
• Willing and able to attend shipyard events and work at remote locations for extended periods of time.
• Willing and able to work in extreme temperatures (heat, cold, humidity).
• Willing and able to work in confined spaces and may be required to use a respirator.
• Willing and able to work on high ladders, or aloft or over the side of the vessel if needed.
• Will be subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable Federal Regulations.
