Job summary

The Washington State Ferries (WSF), a division of WSDOT, seeks a Marine Inspector Specialist to ensure the safety and quality of vessel preservation projects and act as a field representative during shipyard contracts.

You will verify contractor work meets technical standards, support regulatory compliance, and collaborate with internal teams to improve fleet maintenance and reliability.

Qualifications

  • Marine Engineering and Vessel Systems knowledge including structural steel, piping, and preservation processes and the ability to interpret drawings and specs.
  • Quality Assurance and Inspection: knowledge of QA practices, inspection protocols, and acceptance standards for shipyard work.
  • Regulatory Compliance: familiarity with USCG, EPA, and state requirements; ability to coordinate with regulators during shipyard work.
  • Service-Oriented: willingness to meet others' needs; strong communication and trust-building.
  • Growth Mindset: commitment to learning, self-reflection, and adapting to challenges.
  • Safety and Field Operations: ability to work safely in active shipyard environments and access vessels in confined spaces.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect ferry vessel construction, preservation, structural, and piping work for contract compliance and regulatory standards.
  • Monitor contractor performance, document inspections, identify deficiencies, and verify corrective actions.
  • Serve as liaison between contractors and Vessel Project Engineer to interpret requirements and resolve issues.
  • Assist in developing and reviewing specifications, work requests, contracts, and change orders.
  • Evaluate structural, system, and material requirements and prepare project documentation including reports and red-line markups.
  • Review and approve contractor-furnished equipment, materials, drawings, and construction work for compliance.
  • Support equipment commissioning, start-up activities, and factory acceptance testing to ensure project completion.
  • Uphold WSF priorities and values in leadership actions.
