About WSDOT

Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is a multimodal organization with a global reputation for excellence! The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking two Marine Electrician Apprentices to perform marine electrical work in accordance with Federal, State, and US Coast Guard (USCG) regulations. This position supports Eagle Harbor Maintenance Facility in its mission to provide preventative maintenance and emergency repair for ferry vessels and terminals. Duties include new installations of equipment, cabling, and electronics, diagnostics of PLC’s PLC-controlled systems, motors, motor controllers, advanced electronic equipment, and complex control systems.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you/the Marine Electrician Apprentice will:

  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical issues on vessels and at terminals.
  • Perform preventative maintenance for vessels and terminals.
  • Perform insulation resistance testing.
  • Clean and fusion splices of fiber optic systems.
  • Inspect and maintain electrical motors.
  • Maintain DC batteries.
  • Complete infrared scanning of electrical equipment.
  • Install new electrical distribution equipment, relay, and PLC-based controls.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Enrolled in a recognized apprenticeship as a Marine Electrician with the Metal Trades Union.

AND

  • Ability to understand, comprehend, and implement instructions, plans, blueprints, sketches/drawings, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Ability to think strategically and independently in order to develop and implement solutions within established policies.
  • Ability to effectively and appropriately prioritize, analyze, problem-solve, plan, and implement tasks as needed related to both day-to-day and emergent situations.
  • Ability to manage time and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, is adaptable and flexible to change and changing priorities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and build positive internal and external relationships.
  • Ability to move 35lbs on a frequent basis (such as a tool pouch or tools), and as much as 50lbs on a seldom basis (such as batteries or motors).
  • Respiratory/medical questionnaire as required by the regulatory authority, and annual fit test, which may include the requirement to shave if necessary, to obtain a skin-to-rubber seal. Ability to use respiratory protection when required.
  • Maintain a valid Washington State Driver License.
  • Obtain (within 90 days of hire) and continuously maintain thereafter a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
  • Subject to pre-employment and random drug testing pursuant to DOT Testing requirements.
  • May be subject to pre-employment electrical system diagnosing and troubleshooting test.
