Job description

THOR Solutions is actively seeking a highly motivated junior-level Marine Electrical Engineer to support the United States Coast Guard (USCG)’s Ship Design Team in Washington, DC. An ideal candidate will have prior experience with marine electrical engineering or a related specialized field such as electric propulsion, machinery control, power generation or distribution systems, as well as familiarity with U.S. Federal or commercial shipbuilding programs, standards, and regulations.


Typical Responsibilities:
  • Review electrical systems design drawings, interpret ship specifications, evaluate power and lighting systems, and electric or diesel-electric propulsion.
  • Write electrical system specifications for concept, preliminary and contract-level designs and ship modifications.
  • Review marine electrical systems and define engineering requirements.
  • Develop system documentation and ship specifications.
  • Perform design and calculations including but not limited to EPLA (Electric Power Load Analysis), Arc-Flash Analysis, Electrical System Survivability Analysis, and Ground Fault Analysis.
  • Perform design calculations and studies, develop and revise drawings.
  • Conduct evaluation, design, development and analysis of electrical circuits and shipboard systems including component selection and integration.

Location: Full time onsite at USCG Headquarters in Washington, DC. May be limited "local remote" flexibility with customer approval.

Travel: Up to 10% travel is anticipated for ship checks.

Typical Physical Activity: Primarily desk/computer work in an office environment. May involve: repetitive motion. Periodic visits to waterfront/shipboard environments. May involve: traversing shipboard environments (e.g., confined spaces, ladders, hatches) or vision.

Typical Pay Range: The anticipated pay range for this position in the identified location(s) is $60,000 – 85,000. Actual compensation offered will be based upon individual factors including education, qualifications, and experience.

US Citizenship Required: Due to the requirements of the federal contract that this position supports, U.S. citizenship is required. Citizenship will be confirmed via I-9/E-Verify at the start of employment.

Security Clearance Eligibility Required: This position requires a DoD Secret security clearance. A qualified candidate must either already possess an active or interim Secret security clearance (preferred); OR be eligible for a Secret security clearance upon hire.

Typical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronics, or Marine Engineering, or another relevant technical, engineering, or marine discipline from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Zero to two (0-2) years of professional experience in general Marine Electrical fields or specialized fields such as electric propulsion, machinery control, power generation or distribution systems.
  • Experience gained in a US military or commercial shipbuilding environment is preferred.
  • An ideal candidate will have some experience or familiarity with:
    • U.S. Federal or commercial ship or boat building acquisition programs.
    • DoD ACAT I or DHS Level I shipbuilding programs.
    • U.S. Navy Power Distribution Architectures.
    • USCG, USN, ABS and/or commercial ship design rules and regulations.
  • Proficient with common productivity software.
  • Strong communications skills.
