Job summary

Carter Machinery invites applications for the Apprentice Marine Shop & Field Technician program. This 15-month apprenticeship trains you to troubleshoot, diagnose, and overhaul marine engines and propulsion systems while documenting work with reports and orders.

Upon completion, you earn accreditation under the Virginia Department of Labor and become a certified Construction Equipment Technician. Starting pay is per hour with benefits and overtime opportunities.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED, required.
  • Completion of post-secondary diesel engine or related program or two years of mechanical job experience, required.
  • Military equipment experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • The Apprentice Marine Shop & Field Technician provides training to troubleshoot, diagnose, and perform standard mechanical repairs on marine engines and propulsion systems.
  • End of program accreditation under the Department of Labor Apprenticeship after 15 months.
  • Prepare and document work orders, parts lists, and time cards accurately.

Job Title: Apprentice Marine Shop & Field Technician

Shift: 1st

Starting Compensation Range: $20.50 - $26.31 per hour

The Apprentice Marine Shop & Field Technician is provided training and development to accurately troubleshoot and diagnose and perform standard mechanical repairs and complete overhauls on marine engines and propulsion systems. At the end of the 15 month program, the Apprentice is expected to understand electrical, marine engines and propulsion systems fundamentals and be fully accredited under the Department of Labor Apprenticeship.

Requirements for the Apprentice Marine Shop & Field Technician include:

  • Self-starter able to work with limited supervision and meet deadlines
  • Strong mechanical aptitude required
  • Candidate should possess an excellent driving record
  • Excellent customer satisfaction skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment required
  • Proficient in the use of a computer, Microsoft Office products and service software required in position; able to complete service reports and provide pertinent details for work orders
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to write service reports that accurately document diagnosis and repairs performed
  • Must prepare required documentation including work orders, parts lists, and time cards in an accurate and timely manner
  • Must be self-directed, organized, able to interact with coworkers, and work as an integral part of a team
  • Must have the ability to prioritize workload while providing excellent customer service
  • Must be able to work all shifts and overtime as needed to meet customer needs

Seeking Candidates with:

  • High school diploma or GED, required
  • Completion of post-secondary diesel engine or related program or two years of mechanical job experience, required
  • Military equipment experience, a plus
  • Proficiency in the use and application of all CAT electronic tools and software, such as SIS, ET, etc. preferred but training will be provided

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear
  • Frequently required to sit
  • Regularly lift and /or move up to 70 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus

Upon successful completion of your apprenticeship, you will receive an accreditation from The Virginia Department of Labor, officially becoming a certified Construction Equipment Technician. You'll be an integral part of our customers' success and have the opportunity to work with an array of diverse equipment. Carter's Apprenticeship Program is nationally recognized by the Federal Department of Labor and is fully accredited through the Commonwealth of Virginia.
