Job summary

The City of Berkeley is seeking a Temporary Marina Assistant to patrol the Berkeley Marina and adjacent dock areas, deter theft, vandalism and hazards, and assist with towing, rescue operations, and visitor services. Job description

The City of Berkeley is now accepting applications for the Temporary Marina Assistant position! In this role, you will patrol the Berkeley Marina and adjacent dock and ground areas for the prevention of theft, vandalism, and hazardous conditions. You will also perform boat towing and rescue operations, provide customer service, and perform office clerical and custodial duties.

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:

Equivalent to graduation from high school and two (2) years of experience in marina operations equivalent to the Marina Assistant Trainee level. Possession of a Coast Guard Auxiliary or Power Squadron certificate and a lifesaving certificate and small boat handling experience are desirable.


Other requirements include:


  • Must possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.

  • Must be willing to work evening, night and weekend shifts.

  • Must be willing to work out of doors in all weather conditions.

  • Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

  • Upon completion of probationary period, must obtain a valid certificate in cardio pulmonary resuscitation.


The exam process will include, but may not be limited to:



  • Application review for minimum qualifications and required documents (qualifying experience will be calculated based on the administrative review date)

  • Review of Supplemental Questionnaire


Tests may consist of any combination of written, oral or other exercises or assessment procedures that test content and may include, but are not necessarily limited to, typing, math, reading, writing and analytical skills; problem solving ability; computer and software proficiency, or any other job-related knowledge, skill, ability or qualification. The City may, without notice, change or eliminate any assessment component as needs dictate. Applicants passing all examination phases will have their names placed on an employment eligible list that hiring departments will use to conduct final selection interviews.
