Job summary

The City of Gulfport is seeking a Marina Assistant to support harbor operations, greet boaters, and enforce safety in the Marina and Jones Park areas. This overnight role reports to the Harbor Master and involves monitoring vessels, assisting guests, and coordinating slips for permanent and transient tenants.

Essential duties include responding to medical needs, maintaining security, and providing marina and city information. Must hold First Aid/CPR and Coast Guard knowledge as described.

Qualifications

This position is an overnight shift from 8:00 PM - 6:30 AM.

Position Overview

This position reports directly to the Harbor Master and Assistant Harbor Master. The Marina Assistant is responsible for providing a wide range of services, including greeting and assisting arriving boaters, ensuring the security of Marina facilities and vessels, and monitoring Marina structures, docks, and grounds for maintenance or safety concerns. Additional responsibilities include responding to medical needs within the Marina and Jones Park area, monitoring docked vessels for any issues that may impact the safety of life or property, and offering Marina and City information to boaters, their guests, and the general public. This position is classified as a Essential personnel classification for Emergency Response. This means that during an emergency response this position is required to report directly after an emergency. Essential status is defined as employees whose duties are vital to maintain basic municipal functions during an emergency.

  • Greet and assist arriving boaters.
  • Actively participate in maintaining a positive customer service environment.
  • Provide marina and city information to boaters, their guests, and the general public.
  • Providing fair, courteous and respectful interaction with all Marina tenants, vendors, guests and visitors.
  • The renting of permanent and transient boat slips.
  • Ensure security of all facilities and vessels.
  • Respond to and assess medical needs within marina and park area.
  • Monitor docked vessels for any issues relating to safety of life and property.
  • Walk and observe all marina areas, including the beach and parking areas, to ensure safety of boats, boaters, tenants, guests, visitors and property.
  • Operate marine vessels, land-based vehicles, and related equipment.
  • Respond to and extinguish fires in boats, marinas, and Marina businesses.
  • Walking and observing all Marina areas, including the beach and parking areas, to ensure safety of boats, boaters, tenants, guests, visitors, and property.
  • Ensuring all boating operations are conducted safely in the Marina waters.
  • Monitors radios and responds to emergency calls including fires and boats and passengers in distress. Contacts other city departments and agencies as needed.
  • Summons assistance from and reports criminal activities to Police Department, U S Coast Guard, or other appropriate agencies.
  • Perform maintenance and minor repairs of facilities and specialized equipment.
  • Towing disabled vessels during hazardous storms, fires, or related conditions.
  • Direct vessel movement within the Marina.
  • All other duties as assigned by your direct supervisor, manager, director or mayor.

Education And Experience

High school diploma or GED equivalent required. A minimum of two (2) years of experience in the operation of a recreational marina facility, including docking and boat operations, customer service, and general office procedures, is required. Experience in marina patrol or a related field is also required. Applicants must be certified in First Aid and CPR, as well as water safety. Completion of advanced U.S. Coast Guard courses in Rules of the Road and Seamanship, or an equivalent combination of experience and training, is required.

Licenses of Certifications

Must possess a valid Mississippi Driver’s License.

Positions in this classification require the ability to lift up to 50 pounds maximum, with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Duties involve climbing, jumping, and balancing when securing lines or towing boats; transferring equipment such as pumps between vessels; and stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching to tie lines and operate boat controls. The position also requires the use of hearing and touch to evaluate engine performance and identify mechanical issues. Work is performed primarily outdoors in extreme weather conditions throughout all seasons, including hot, cold, wet, freezing, windy, and intensely sunny environments.
