Job summary

Steinway & Sons is seeking a Production Supervisor to oversee a manufacturing team at our piano production plant in Astoria, Queens. You will schedule and assign work, inspect department production, and coordinate interdepartmental activities to meet targets and quality standards.

The role prioritizes workflow, deadlines, and direct feedback to leadership. Candidates should have strong leadership, drawing on Lean practices and union environment experience as applicable.

Qualifications

  • High School graduate required.
  • 5+ years leadership experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to read and analyze engineering specifications and drawings.
  • Lean manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Union environment experience a plus.
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
  • Outstanding organizational and leadership abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe work environment at all times.
  • Set daily/weekly/monthly goals and communicate them to employees.
  • Maintain quality service by enforcing organizational standards.
  • Coordinate and supervise workflow within the department.
  • Develop and implement a production schedule based on projected requirements.
  • Maintain effective employee relations and handle first-step grievances.
  • Identify issues in efficiency/productivity and propose improvements.
  • Compile and analyze production performance data and respond to requests.
  • Maintain and control inventory of materials and equipment.
  • Schedule and assign personnel to complete the production plan and adjust schedules as needed.
  • Train new employees and upgrade skills of current staff.
  • Orient and instruct new employees.
  • Supervise maintenance of department tools, machines, and equipment.
  • Provide feedback on job performance and enforce policies and procedures.

Description

Steinway & Sons is currently looking for a Production Supervisor to oversee a team in our piano manufacturing Plant located in Astoria, Queens. The Production Supervisor will be responsible for scheduling and assigning work, inspecting department production, and coordinating interdepartmental activities to meet production targets and quality standards. They will monitor and prioritize the workflow of production to meet deadlines as well as provide direct feedback to the leadership team.

Main Responsibilities
  • Maintain a safe work environment at all times
  • Ability to set daily/weekly/monthly goals, communicating them effectively to employees
  • Maintain quality service by establishing and enforcing organization standards
  • Coordinate and supervise workflow within the department
  • Develop and implement a production schedule according to projected requirements
  • Maintain effective employee relations – handles first step in grievance procedure
  • Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills, including the ability to spot issues in efficiency/productivity and suggest improvements
  • Provide manufacturing information by compiling, initiating, sorting, and analyzing production performance records and data; answering questions and responding to requests
  • Maintain and control inventory of required materials and equipment
  • Complete production plan by scheduling and assigning personnel; accomplishing work results; establishing priorities; monitoring progress; revising schedules; resolving problems; reporting results of the processing flow on shift production summaries
  • Training of new employees and upgrading skills of current employees
  • Orientation and instruction of new employees
  • Supervise maintenance of department tools, machines, and equipment
  • Accomplish manufacturing staff results by communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results; coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; initiating, coordinating, and enforcing systems, policies, and procedures
Requirements
  • High School graduate
  • 5+ years leadership experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Ability to read and analyze engineering specifications and drawings
  • Lean manufacturing experience preferred
  • Union environment experience a plus
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft office
  • Outstanding organizational and leadership abilities

The estimated annualized base salary range for this role is $80,000-$100,000. Compensation will vary based on skills and experience. New employees are eligible to participate in a robust benefits package on the first day including medical, dental, vision, FSAs, generous 401k contribution, paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, professional development, and more.
