Job summary

Glidewell Dental in Irvine, CA is seeking a skilled machinist to set up and operate machine tools to very tight tolerances. You will produce precision items, inspect parts with micrometers and calipers, and read blueprints to determine methods and tolerances.

Prior experience and strict adherence to safety protocols are essential. The role requires formal technical training or a four-year program and at least five years of setup experience.

Qualifications

• Graduate of technical school, full apprenticeship program, or completion of in-company four-year training program to satisfaction of plant training committee.
• Minimum five (5) year set-up experience as a machinist.

Responsibilities

• Set up machines in accordance with job prints and specifications to very close tolerances.
• Produce basic precision items beyond the capabilities of production machine operators.
• Machine parts to specifications using lathes, milling machines, shapers, or grinders.
• Measure, examine, and test completed units to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications with precision instruments.
• Set up, adjust, and operate basic machine tools and advanced variation tools for precision machining.
• Align and secure fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, and materials onto machines.
• Monitor feed and speed of machines during machining.
• Study samples, blueprints, drawings, and engineering info to determine methods and tolerances.
• Select appropriate tools, machines, and materials for machinery work.
• Lay out, measure, and mark metal stock for cuts.
• Observe and listen to operating machines to diagnose malfunctions and determine repairs.
• Operate all common machine shop equipment and hand tools.
• Work from prints or drawings to produce a variety of items.
• Follow safety rules and lock-out/tag-out procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Education

Technical education or apprenticeship + four-year training program

• Sets up, adjusts, and operate all of the basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools in order to perform precision machining operations.
• Aligns and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines.
• Monitors the feed and speed of machines during the machining process.
• Studies sample parts, blueprints, drawings, and engineering information in order to determine methods and sequences of operations needed to fabricate products, and determine product dimensions and tolerances.
• Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work.
• Lays out, measures, and marks metal stock in order to display placement of cuts.
• Observe and listen to operating machines or equipment in order to diagnose machine malfunctions and to determine need for adjustments or repairs.
