Job summary

Axillon Aerospace seeks a Manufacturing Engineer 2 to support and improve composite manufacturing capabilities for aerospace products. You will contribute to NPI, process optimization, and continuous improvement across design and deployment of composites processes.

Responsibilities include developing and refining manufacturing methods, performing FEA validation, and collaborating with production, QA and vendors to meet project goals. A strong CAD/FEA and Lean/Six Sigma background is preferred.

Qualifications

• Bachelor degree in Engineering or equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience.
• 3–5 years in manufacturing, with 2–5+ years in composites manufacturing, processing, or testing.
• Proficiency in CAD software and FEA/CAE structural analysis tools.
• Strong understanding of polymer matrix behaviors, mechanical properties, and safety standards.
• Advanced knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma or other continuous improvement methodologies.

Responsibilities

• Evaluates manufacturing processes by designing and conducting research programs related to composites.
• Develops manufacturing processes and designs by studying product requirements and implementing methods.
• Minimizes technical and human process variability.
• Maintains revision control for processes and design changes.
• Improves efficiency by planning workflow, space, and equipment layout.
• Calculates production, labor, and material costs and reviews schedules.
• Coordinates with outside vendors on development of composites manufacturing solutions.
• Works with production, quality control, and suppliers to meet goals and budgets.
• Creates 3D CAD models and defines fiber architectures, layups, and resin systems.
• Develops work instructions, tooling plans, and assembly methods.
• Uses FEA to validate structural integrity and conducts material tests.
• Leads root-cause analyses on material or process failures.
• Supports cross-functional collaboration across Design, Manufacturing and QA.

Job Designation

The Manufacturing Engineer 2 provides a range of expertise in supporting and improving the manufacturing capabilities to produce products. The Engineer will contribute to improving a range of composites manufacturing processes that can directly impact the sustaining and growth efforts of operations. This position will be focused on design and deployment of aerospace composites manufacturing, but is not limited to: NPI, Process optimization, and Continuous Improvement as the Manufacturing Engineer will participate in both the introduction of new products and technology as well as optimization of existing processes.

Job Core Responsibilities

• Evaluates manufacturing processes by designing and conducting research programs; applying knowledge of product design, programming, assembly, tooling, and materials pertaining to composites
• Develops manufacturing processes and designs by studying product and material requirements; researching, designing, modifying, and implementing manufacturing methods and equipment.
• Understands and minimize both technical process variability and human process variability
• Participates in Design and Manufacturing and maintaining revision control for processes and design changes.
• Improves manufacturing efficiency by analyzing and planning workflow, space requirements, and equipment layout.
• Provides manufacturing decision-making information by calculating production, labor, and material costs; reviewing production schedules; estimating future requirements.
• Coordinates with outside vendors on development and design of composites manufacturing solutions
• Regular, consistent and punctual attendance is required. May need to work nights and weekends, variable schedule(s) and additional hours as necessary
• Design & Modeling: Create 3D CAD models and define fiber architectures, ply layups, and resin systems. Optimization of process and consulting with process engineers on a “design for manufacturability” approach
• Process Development: Develop manufacturing work instructions, tooling plans, and assembly methods (such as layup and curing).
• Testing & Analysis: Use Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to validate structural integrity and run physical material tests.
• Troubleshooting: Lead root-cause analyses on material or process failures and implement corrective fixes.
• Collaboration: Work with production, quality control, and suppliers to meet project goals and budgets

Education:

Bachelor degree in Engineering or equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience that will allow successful performance of job expectations

Years Of Experience

• 3 - 5 years of relevant experience in manufacturing environment
• 2 to 5+ years of hands-on experience with composite manufacturing, processing, or structural testing.

Technical Skills And Knowledge

• Proficiency in CAD software and FEA/CAE structural analysis tools.
• Strong understanding of polymer matrix behaviors, mechanical properties, and industry safety standards
• Experience with 3D Solid Modeling and Simulation Software
• Excellent ability to apply a systematic and analytical approach to problem solving
• NC/Robot Programming experience preferred
• Advanced knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma or other continuous improvement
• Ability to explain a range of complex technical information
• Effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills to drive tasks to completion
• Adaptable to changing requirements and situations
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and database management tools
• Siemens NX with Fibersim experience a plus
• Composites manufacturing experience a plus keying on knowledge of thermoset and thermoplastic materials and chemistry

Incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job. Work is performed primarily in an office environment. Typically requires the ability to sit for extended periods of time (66%+ each day), ability to hear the telephone, ability to enter data on a computer and may also require the ability to lift up to 10 pounds.

Manufacturing / Non-Sedentary Requirements

Incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job. Work may be performed in an office or warehouse environment. Typically requires the ability to spend 66%+ hours each work day doing the following activities: stand for extended periods of time, walk, bend, stoop, or climb. May have possible exposure to dust, and may require the ability to lift and/or push up to 50 pounds 33% - 66% of the time.
