Federal Signal Corporation is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer to design, develop, and continuously improve manufacturing processes across our North American facilities. You will work with Design Engineering, Production, Quality, and Maintenance to optimize fit, form, function, and manufacturability.

The role emphasizes Lean and continuous improvement, documentation of SOPs, training, and implementation of ECNs and ECRs to ensure safety, quality, and efficiency.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing/Industrial/Mechanical Engineering.
  • 2–5 years experience in manufacturing or heavy fabrication.

Responsibilities

  • Determine and develop manufacturing processes, equipment, tooling, and workflows.
  • Collaborate with Design Engineering to improve manufacturability and cost.
  • Lead and support Lean, Six Sigma, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Provide documentation, SOPs, and work instructions for production.
  • Train supervisors and shop personnel on process changes.
  • Investigate new equipment or technology to improve safety and quality.
  • Process ECNs and review ECRs for safety, cost, and efficiency.
  • Support root cause analysis and corrective actions for production issues.
  • Partner with Production, Quality, and Maintenance to reduce downtime.

Job description

The Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and continuously improving manufacturing processes to ensure products are produced safely, efficiently, and to required quality standards. This role works closely with Design Engineering, Production, Quality, and Maintenance teams to optimize fit, form, function, cost, and manufacturability while supporting Lean and continuous improvement initiatives across the facility.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Determine and develop manufacturing processes, equipment requirements, tooling, and workflows to produce products in an economical and efficient manner while maintaining fit, form, function, and quality standards.
  • Collaborate with Design Engineering to improve product designs for manufacturability, cost reduction, quality enhancement, and production efficiency.
  • Lead and support process improvement initiatives using Lean, Six Sigma, and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Provide clear documentation, work instructions, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to support production teams.
  • Train and communicate process changes, new equipment usage, and revised work methods to supervisors and shop personnel.
  • Investigate, evaluate, and recommend new equipment, tooling, or technology to improve manufacturing processes, safety, capacity, and quality.
  • Process Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) in a timely manner and ensure effective communication of changes to all affected departments.
  • Review and process Engineering Change Requests (ECRs), evaluating the impact on safety, quality, cost, and production efficiency to ensure changes align with company objectives.
  • Analyze current and proposed manufacturing processes to identify and implement improvements that enhance workplace safety and ergonomics.
  • Support root cause analysis and corrective actions related to production issues, quality concerns, and process deviations.
  • Partner with Production, Quality, and Maintenance teams to resolve manufacturing challenges and reduce downtime, scrap, and rework.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 2–5 years of experience in a manufacturing or heavy fabrication environment preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, fabrication methods, and production workflows.
  • Experience with Lean manufacturing, continuous improvement, and process optimization.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and bills of material.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and root cause analysis skills.
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to work cross-functionally with engineering, production, and shop personnel.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with Syte-Line/SolidWorks systems preferred.
