Job description

Overview

We're looking for an Manufacturing Engineer to support our Electrical Solutions & Prefabrication group in Champlin, MN. Unlike a traditional mass-production role, this position acts as a bridge between custom, high-mix/low-volume make-to-order shop operations and dynamic field installations. The Manufacturing Engineer will serve as a core optimization partner, driving the documentation of standardized workflows, designing flexible workstation strategies, and leveraging operational data to optimize panel shop, prefabrication shop, and active job site construction processes.

Responsibilities

The basic responsibilities of the Manufacturing Engineer include but are not limited to the following:

  • Process Standardization: Observe, break down, and document standardized work processes across panel shops, prefabrication environments, and field operations to capture institutional knowledge and ensure baseline quality.
  • Workstation Design: Design and deploy ergonomic, highly flexible workstation standard documents and layouts tailored to accommodate a high mix of custom project builds.
  • KPI & Operational Reporting: Create and maintain mechanisms to track, analyze, and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) such as cycle time, material waste, throughput, and labor utilization.
  • Production Line & Control Development: Assist in developing scalable, temporary, or variable production lines and robust procedure control documentation to safeguard repeatable accuracy in a make-to-order landscape.
  • Lean & Waste Mitigation: Champion Lean and 5S principles, identifying and eliminating non-value-added activities (waste) in material handling, staging, and assembly.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner directly with Shop Supervisors, Project Managers, and Field Foremen to align prefab capacity and production schedules with real-time field installation demand.
  • Technology & Tooling Evaluation: Evaluate and recommend specialized tooling, fixtures, or automation opportunities that can streamline custom panel fabrication and kitting processes.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a closely related technical field with 3+ years of progressive experience. OR
  • Associate degree in a technical discipline combined with 5+ years of progressive experience implementing lean/industrial engineering principles within a custom job shop, specialized fabrication environment, or the construction industry.
Qualifications
  • Strong foundation in Lean Manufacturing, 5S, DMAIC, Kanban, Standard Work, and Continuous Improvement methodologies-specifically applied to high-mix, low-volume or non-standard manufacturing environments.
  • Familiarity with electrical systems, custom panel shops, or industrialized construction prefabrication methods is preferred.
  • Proficient in data visualization and analysis tools (e.g., advanced MS Excel, BI Systems) to track operational metrics.
  • Familiarity with CAD software (AutoCAD, Revit, or SolidWorks) for designing spatial shop layouts, material flows, and workstation setups.
  • Familiarity with ERP, ECO/DCO, MRP, MES, or similar operational management systems.
  • High emotional intelligence with the ability to build strong, trusting relationships with both shop craftworkers and field operations teams.
  • Strong proactive problem-solving abilities, with a willingness to challenge the status quo constructively.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to document clear, visual SOPs.
Working Conditions
  • This role is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement; however, routine physical presence is required in the Champlin shops to collaborate with production teams and validate processes.
  • Regular local travel to active construction job sites and the Kasson, MN prefabrication shop for field time-studies, process alignment, and coordinator meetings.
