Job summary

Southern Valve Service is seeking an experienced Manual Machinist Level 3 to independently set up and operate multiple manual machines, performing complex machining, repair, modification, and reconditioning of valve components per specifications.

The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of manual machining experience, strong skills with manual lathes, knee mills, boring mills, and/or vertical turret lathes, and the ability to read drawings, plan steps, and mentor junior machinists.

Qualifications

• Minimum 10+ years manual machining experience.
• Ability to independently set up and operate multiple manual machines.
• Experience with valve repair or industrial repair preferred.

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate manual machines to machine valve components.
• Repair, modify, and recondition valve bodies, discs, stems, and related parts.
• Plan machining steps, select tooling, and verify tolerances.
• Mentor Level 1 and 2 machinists and work with supervisors and inspectors.

Manual Machinist - Level 3

Southern Valve Service is committed to providing top-class valve modification and reconditioning work. Many valve manufacturers and Gulf Coast chemical processors and refineries trust our integrity and competence to perform a wide variety of valve modifications and repairs on time, to specification, and within budget.

Description

The Manual Machinist Level 3 position is for an experienced manual machinist capable of independently setting up and operating multiple types of manual machines. This position is responsible for complex machining, repair, modification, and reconditioning of industrial valve components while maintaining critical dimensions, quality standards, and customer specifications.

The Level 3 machinist should be able to plan machining steps, determine setup methods, select tooling, troubleshoot problems, and produce quality work with minimal supervision. This role will also assist in training less experienced machinists.

Education & Experience

Minimum preferred qualifications:

• 10+ years of manual machining experience
• Strong experience with manual lathes, knee mills, horizontal boring mills, and/or vertical turret lathes
• Experience in valve repair, industrial repair, or job-shop machining strongly preferred
• Experience machining large, irregular, worn, or repaired components preferred

Skills and Abilities Required

• Ability to independently set up and operate multiple manual machines, including manual lathes, knee mills, horizontal boring mills, and vertical turret lathes
• Strong understanding of materials, cutting tools, speeds and feeds, fixturing, indicating, and machining techniques
• Ability to machine large, irregular, repaired, or worn components where original dimensions may need to be restored
• Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, sketches, samples, and repair instructions
• Ability to plan machining sequence and determine the best method to complete the work
• Ability to hold critical dimensions and verify work using precision measuring equipment
• Ability to perform turning, facing, boring, milling, drilling, tapping, threading, counterboring, grooving, and repair machining operations
• Ability to troubleshoot setup, tooling, chatter, finish, and dimensional issues
• Ability to identify potential nonconformances or repair concerns before work proceeds too far
• Ability to work with supervisors, inspectors, welders, and mechanics to complete repair work correctly
• Ability to mentor or assist Level 1 and Level 2 machinists when needed
• Responsible for personal safety and the safety of others
• Must be able to complete complex work with minimal supervision
• Must be able to stand for long periods, reach, handle tools, and perform physical shop work
• Must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 35 pounds

Typical Work

• Complex setup and machining of valve bodies, bonnets, discs, seats, stems, shafts, and other valve components
• Machining weld-repaired parts back to required dimensions
• Restoring sealing surfaces, gasket surfaces, bores, counterbores, bolt holes, threads, and fits
• Operating VTLs and horizontal boring mills on larger or more complex components
• Determining practical repair machining methods when parts are worn, damaged, or out of original condition
• Supporting quality requirements to reduce rejects, rework, and nonconformances

Hours

Full-time position: Monday-Friday, 8:00-4:30, with frequent overtime and weekends as needed to meet customer deliveries. Schedule changes may also be required.
