Job summary

Hearst Connecticut Media Group in Norwalk, CT is seeking a dynamic Managing Editor, Multimedia to lead video, photo, audio and social efforts across platforms. You will set editorial strategy for on- and off-platform growth and supervise a multimedia team to deepen engagement with audiences.

You will oversee daily and long-form multimedia content, driving quality storytelling and audience growth, with a focus on metrics-driven decision making and cross-department collaboration.

Qualifications

  • Experience editing video, photos and audio in a newsroom environment.
  • Deep understanding of social video editing for platforms like Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Shorts.
  • Prior experience in a leadership or management role.
  • Excellent writing, editing and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to shoot high-quality video if necessary.
  • Flexible schedule for breaking news and special content opportunities.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in journalism, English, communications or related field.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented with the ability to juggle multiple tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Assign and edit video from reporters and photographers into polished one- to three-minute videos.
  • Work closely with newsroom leaders to ensure key stories get the best visual treatment, including photos.
  • Manage a team and provide training, mentoring and feedback to the newsroom on multimedia best practices.
  • Populate a daily schedule of expected incoming multimedia and communicate changes to the audience staff.
  • Understand topics that work well for social video and pursue those opportunities, assisting with editing as needed.
  • Analyze metrics and use them to inform coverage decisions in real-time and long-term.
  • Research, pitch and produce original videos that are informative and entertaining.
  • Optimize videos across platforms with strong engagement tactics, titles, thumbnails, and metadata.
  • Communicate effectively across departments during breaking and planned news events.
  • Help build and maintain a library of video assets.
  • Participate in news meetings to learn how stories take shape and audiences we’re trying to reach.

Managing Editor, Multimedia

As the state’s largest local news organization, Hearst Connecticut Media Group is reaching audiences with ambitious, compelling journalism wherever they are through CT Insider’s app and websites, in newsletters, on social media, through audio and in print.

We’re looking for an innovative, collaborative Managing Editor of Multimedia who will be responsible for our video, photo, audio and social media portfolio. This senior leader will set our editorial strategy at a critical time for the newsroom for on- and off-platform video growth.

They will work closely with the audience team, editors, reporters and photographers to ensure Hearst Connecticut’s multimedia efforts deepen our journalism and engage, convert and retain users across platforms.

This includes overseeing and editing daily and long-term multimedia content that will reach millions of viewers. This role represents our desire to continue to push the boundaries of traditional visual storytelling.

Duties and responsibilities:
  • Assign and edit video from reporters and photographers into polished one- to three-minute videos, sometimes under tight deadlines
  • Work closely with newsroom leaders to ensure key stories get the best visual treatment, including photos
  • Manage a team and provide training, mentoring and feedback to the rest of the newsroom on multimedia best practices
  • Populate a daily schedule of expected incoming multimedia and communicate any changes to the audience staff
  • Understand the topics that can work well for social video and ensure those opportunities are pursued, lending a hand with editing as needed
  • Demonstrate a high comfort level with analyzing and interpreting metrics and using them to inform coverage decisions in real-time and long-term
  • Research, pitch and produce original videos that are both informative and entertaining
  • Optimize videos across platforms by demonstrating a strong understanding of engagement tactics and search engine optimization. This includes titles, thumbnails, metadata and more.
  • Communicate effectively and collaboratively across departments during breaking and planned news events
  • Help build and maintain a library of video assets
  • Participate in news meetings to learn how stories take shape and better understand which audiences we’re trying to reach
Qualifications:
  • Experience editing video, photos and audio in tools like Canva, Photoshop or Premiere, preferably in a newsroom environment

  • Deep understanding of social video editing for platforms like Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Shorts — you can take various raw clips and make a truly fascinating video

  • Prior experience in a leadership or management role

  • Excellent writing, editing and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to shoot high-quality and raw video if necessary

  • Quick, organized, technical problem solver able to consistently meet deadlines

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in journalism, English, communications or related field preferred

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule for breaking news and special content opportunities

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented with a proven ability to effectively juggle multiple tasks
