Job Description

The Office of External Affairs manages many of the agency's most critical interactions with the public, from raising awareness and promoting healthy behaviors to advancing policies and responding to health emergencies. The Bureau of Communications, housed within the Office of External Affairs, develops culturally responsive public health marketing campaigns; generates and crafts materials to inform New Yorkers of health information and program services, ensuring accessibility for all; provides access to translation services for collateral materials and clinics; maintains the agency's website; and publishes content on the agency's social media platforms. Within Creative Communications, the Digital Strategy group manages external-facing communications, including social media and the agency's website to inform New Yorkers of key health topics and emergency situations.

We are seeking to hire a Managing Editor. Reporting to the Director of Digital Strategy, the Managing Editor oversees the day-to-day maintenance and administration of the Health Department's website (NYC.gov/health) and other digital properties, in collaboration with the larger Creative Communications team.

Duties Will Include But Not Be Limited To

  • Assist Director in overseeing the management of the website and its contents, ensuring that the language used online meets standards of editorial excellence and is consistent with agency mission, policies, and goals
  • Advance the Health Department's mission and strategic plan by writing and editing content on key public health issues for the public, medical professionals, and other public health stakeholders.
  • Directly supervise two web team staff members. Provide strategic guidance and hands-on support in execution of assigned projects and technical aspects of website management.
  • Develop editorial plans for NYC.gov/health and delegate editorial projects to staff based on agency priorities.
  • Demonstrate strategic thinking and planning in the creation and proofing of written content, ensuring accessibility for an audience of diverse New Yorkers, including people with disabilities and limited English proficiency. Adhere to plain language and digital accessibility best practices, agency style standards, and applicable federal and local laws.

Implement UI/UX best practices to make content improvements, while working within the NYC.gov template and infrastructure.

  • Coordinate and collaborate with other members of the Creative Communications team (Marketing, Language Services, Content and Copy, and Design) as projects call for interaction and support. Work closely with the Content and Copy team to develop and maintain content for the Health Department's website.
  • Collaborate with agency programs (subject-matter experts) to develop website content plans and effectively foster relationships throughout the Health Department community with a diverse range of stakeholders.

This role is expected to work non-business hours during emergencies.

  • Experience working with the public health sector and coordinating projects involving multiple stakeholders
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects, tasks, and timelines
  • Demonstrate a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude in dealing with colleagues, direct reports, leadership, and stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • For Assignment Level I (only physical, biological and environmental sciences and public health) A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health.

To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above, candidates must have:

  • A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in "2" above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in "1" and "2" above.
