Managing Editor

POULTRY SCIENCE ASSOCIATION

The Poultry Science Association (PSA) is currently seeking Managing Editor to support the continued growth and development of our journals.

PSA is a non-profit, professional organization of scientists engaged in academic, corporate, and technical support of the poultry industries with a vision to be the world's most respected source for the poultry sciences. This position is a full-time staff position situated at the PSA Headquarters in Champaign, Illinois.

Among other responsibilities, the Managing Editor is responsible for planning and managing all day-to-day editorial workflow of assigned journal(s), particularly in the pre-publication phase at the Association's physical facility in Champaign.

This position reports directly to the Executive Director and will interface regularly with the Senior Managing Editor. Compensation is commensurate with experience.

Travel includes attendance at the January Board of Directors Meeting/IPPE, PSA Annual Meeting, and other Association events as may arise in the course of business.

Duties

• Evaluate incoming manuscripts for basic formatting and scope adherence, and assign to Editor in Chief(s) and/or Section Editors (SEs) as applicable
• Review journal timelines and editorial performances on a quarterly basis
• Work closely with the Senior Managing Editor and Editor in Chief(s) to continually evaluate the submission, review, and publication processes for areas of potential improvement
• Help manage Section Editors and Reviewers and provide direct assistance and training when necessary
• Assist the Senior Managing Editor and Editor in Chief(s) in coordinating editorial publications and meetings and in implementing strategic action
• Enforce deadlines and provide basic troubleshooting help for authors, editors, and reviewers in Editorial Manager
• Help maintain, utilize, and grow PSA's reviewer database in Editorial Manager
• Serve as liaison between journal editorial board(s) and publisher on matters related to article submission, review, and publication
• Assist the Senior Managing Editor and Conference Programs Coordinator in compiling the year-end Association Notes (to be published in Poultry Science)
• Assist the Senior Managing Editor in compiling the annual Academy of Reviewers list
• Provide additional backup/support for the Senior Managing Editor as needed
• Attend occasional journal-related events on behalf of PSA and/or Editor in Chief(s)
• Collaborate with Editor in Chief(s) to determine special issue content and topics when applicable
• Collaborate with the Senior Managing Editor and other key journal stakeholders to develop and implement section editor training, a reviewer incentive program, and opportunities to leverage our digital journal content for industry curriculum development, white papers, and other strategic applications.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 1-3 years experience preferred but not required.
• Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Sciences, or other related field.
• Demonstrated organizational skills, ability to think and act strategically with the capacity for growth in strategic thinking ability.
• Strong problem-solving skills, and proven project management and continuous improvement experience, detail-oriented and able to prioritize tasks, balance multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
• Open and direct communicator; oral and written communication skills are essential.
• Focus on accuracy and detail.
• Sound judgment and unwavering ethics.
• Self-motivation, independent work habits.
• Strong computer skills and highly proficient with Microsoft Office Suite of software programs.
• Agriculture and/or poultry background helpful, but not specifically required.
