Job summary

Innovive is seeking a hands-on Vivarium Manager in the Boston area to oversee day-to-day operations across assigned vivaria. You will lead a team of animal care technicians, manage scheduling, and ensure regulatory compliance while coordinating with clients and safety officers.

The role emphasizes ownership of people, processes, and documentation within a fast-paced environment, with opportunities for growth in a growing company that supports animal research facilities.

Qualifications

• BS or BA preferred; substantial experience may substitute.
• AALAS certification is a plus.
• CVT credential preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Manage and hire animal care technicians for vivaria.
• Oversee day-to-day vivarium operations and compliance.
• Plan staff scheduling including overtime and holidays.
• Oversee inventory of cage systems, bedding, food, and supplies.
• Train technicians on SOPs and ensure protocol adherence.
• Maintain daily census and records, including inspection docs.
• Collaborate with Safety Officers and IACUC to implement policies.
• Notify clients of animal welfare concerns and manage maintenance logs.
• Provide coaching and annual performance reviews; report to management.

Job Summary:

We're looking for a motivated, hands‑on Vivarium Manager to oversee day‑to‑day operations across our assigned vivaria. This is a great fit for someone who thrives in a fast‑paced environment, enjoys working directly with clients, and is ready to take ownership of both people and processes. You'll manage a team of animal care technicians while serving as the operational and compliance backbone of our vivarium sites.

Position Responsibilities

• Manage (and hire) Animal care technicians
• Oversee day‑to‑day execution of job duties at all assigned vivaria
• Plan for staff scheduling and routine husbandry coverage for overtime, weekend, and holidays
• Oversee the ordering and inventory management of facility materials (caging, bedding, food, janitorial supplies at respective vivaria)
• Train technicians on Innovive SOPs and ensure animal technicians follow procedures
• Maintain daily census for all assigned vivaria
• Review and maintain facility records (per diem forms, cage cards, PCR/Environmental testing records, facility walk‑through record, inspection records, etc.)
• Collaborate with client’s Safety Officers and IACUC Chair to implement the safety and IACUC policies in vivaria
• Notify clients of any animal welfare concerns
• Maintain equipment maintenance logs and oversee contractors providing equipment maintenance
• As a direct manager, perform coaching and counseling to trouble‑shoot personnel issues, and perform yearly performance reviews
• Keep management abreast of vivarium operations and client feedback

Qualifications & Skills

• Must have a fundamental understanding of animal welfare and the importance of ethical use of animals in research
• Familiar with rodent research animal species (mice, rats) handling and their appropriate use
• Expert understanding of animal research facilities, equipment, and supplies
• Ability to apply fundamental principles of sanitation and disinfection
• Familiarity with Innovive rack and caging systems
• Flexible to adjust work schedules to accommodate varying workloads, including weekends, holiday, and evenings to accommodate business needs
• Strong writing skills and ability to keep well‑documented, accurate work records
• Able to work in a high‑paced, quality and customer service environment
• Able to perform assigned tasks independently
• Must be detail oriented and able to multitask
• Excellent work ethic and must be a team player
• Demonstrate proficiency and accuracy in basic mathematical computation
• Demonstrate proficiency in business software, email, etc.
• Understand basic animal techniques, including handling, dosing, blood/tissue collections, etc.
• Familiar with regulatory compliance (e.g., IACUC, NIH, AAALAC, OLAW, DEA, FDA)
• Understand Management principles
• Understand Human Resources basics

Education and Experience

• BS or BA degree is preferred but substantial experience may be substituted. AALAS certification is a plus
• 2 years managing or leading in vivo vivarium staff; significant animal care exposure
• Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) credential preferred but not required.
