Responsibilities

• Manage studies by performing tumor measurements, body weight, and clinical observations per protocols.
• Perform dosing via oral gavage, IP, SC, and IT with proper technique and documentation.
• Collect blood, conduct tissue harvests, and ensure humane endpoints per IACUC policies.
• Assist with in vivo surgeries and postoperative care, including animal welfare.

The Research Associate I (RA1) in the vivarium is responsible for supporting preclinical in vivo studies through hands‑on animal work, dosing, surgical procedures, and data collection. The RA1 ensures the accurate execution of study protocols while maintaining high standards of animal welfare, data integrity, and compliance with institutional and regulatory guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

Study Management

• Perform tumor measurements, body weight assessments, and clinical observations according to study protocols.
• Record and maintain accurate, timely, and legible data in accordance non-GLP requirements.
• Communicate study progress, animal health, and any protocol deviations to the Study Director or senior staff.

Dosing Procedures

• Perform compound administration via multiple routes including:
  • Oral gavage (PO)
  • Intraperitoneal (IP)
  • Subcutaneous (SC)
  • Intratumoral (IT)
• Ensure proper dosing techniques, animal handling, and documentation are followed in accordance with SOPs.

Study Requirements and Endpoints

• Conduct blood collection (via approved routes).
• Perform minor tissue harvesting and animal takedowns at study endpoints.
• Follow humane endpoints and ensure compliance with IACUC and institutional animal care policies.

Surgical Procedures

Must be proficient in and able to independently perform:

• Subcutaneous (SC) tumor implants
• Subcutaneous inoculations
• Mammary Fat Pad (MFP) implants
• Mammary Fat Pad (MFP) inoculations

In Vivo Support

• Prepare mice for surgery, including anesthesia setup and surgical site preparation.
• Provide post‑operative care and monitoring.
• Perform tattooing and ear tagging for animal identification.
• Conduct sick mouse care, including documentation and communication with veterinary staff.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Animal Science, or a related field, or equivalent relevant laboratory experience.
• 0–2 years of experience in a vivarium or in vivo research setting preferred.
• AALAS certification (ALAT or higher) desirable but not required.

Skills & Competencies:

• Strong understanding of rodent handling and restraint techniques.
• Demonstrated proficiency with multiple dosing routes and surgical methods.
• Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow SOPs and study protocols.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
• Commitment to maintaining animal welfare and ethical research standards.

Work Environment

• Position involves routine handling of laboratory animals (mice).
• Work may require extended periods of standing, bending, and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• May require weekend or holiday work depending on study schedules.

Reporting Structure

This position reports directly to the In Vivo Manager, with functional guidance from senior research associates or team leads.
