We’re looking for people who think big, act fearlessly, and create an inclusive environment that drives positive impact to join our team.

What you'll do

We are thrilled to announce an exciting opportunity for an onsite Manager of Technical Revenue Recognition to join our dynamic team in Carlsbad, CA!

The Technical Revenue Recognition team promotes a culture of collaboration, creativity, personal development, flexibility, and work-life balance while striving to provide a public accounting type mentality when it comes to work product quality, risk assessment, and learning opportunities. The team fosters an environment for challenging the status quo, real-time coaching, and sharing ideas and best practices with the goal of constantly improving and expanding the team’s roles, responsibilities, and influence from an operational and efficiency perspective.

At Viasat, the Technical Revenue Recognition team serves more in a consultant-type capacity than an accounting processing role. On this team, the primary responsibility of the Manager is to oversee the Technical Revenue Recognition team and become a Revenue Recognition expert for Viasat. As an expert, the Manager will be responsible for the oversight and review of significant customer contracts and the determination of the proper revenue recognition model in accordance with ASC 606.

You will interact with different functional areas of the company including business area finance/program managers, contracts, legal, and corporate accounting (including but not limited to GL, accounts receivable, inventory, capital, SEC reporting and treasury). The role will entail variety, complexity, and the opportunity to diversify your own personal development as the role requires not just a detailed review/interpretation of contracts but also requires you to obtain a detailed understanding of our end-to-end process of how products and services are provided to our customers.

The day-to-day

As you develop in this role you will become a point of contact for the various business areas throughout the company, including Viasat’s international entities. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Lead a team of experienced revenue recognition professionals.

  • Oversee review of significant customer contracts and memorandum documentation in accordance with US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Work with business finance leaders to strategize and develop expectations as to how future contracts will impact future financial results.
  • Make decisions on GAAP application which will impact the timing and extent of revenue recognition.
  • Oversee various financial reporting close tasks during each quarter including the review of revenue recognition cut-off and performing reconciliations and detailed tie-outs for both testing and disclosure purposes.
What you'll need
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 6+ years of Big 4 experience or relevant industry experience
  • Licensed CPA
  • U.S. Citizenship required
What will help you on the job
  • Detail-oriented; nuances in contract language can impact technical accounting conclusions.
  • Interested and experienced in understanding processes and proposing continuous improvement solutions.
  • A self-motivated desire to learn and constantly improve. Takes responsibility for own development.
  • Ability to oversee a team and foster their development.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) and ability to build relationships with others within and outside the accounting team. This includes the ability to understand different perspectives, goals, and limitations of various parties impacted by technical accounting decisions.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills. Takes ownership of the success of the team as a whole. Able to prioritize competing demands and continuously meet deadlines.
  • Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Experience in performing technical research and reviewing accounting position papers. Takes pride in defending their position but is open to different viewpoints/interpretations.
  • ERP system experience (Oracle/SAP preferred).
