Day in the Life

The Safety Manager is responsible for the operational leadership and oversight of the company's transportation safety and regulatory compliance programs. This role ensures full compliance with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations governing commercial motor vehicle operations and workplace safety. Reporting to the Director of Risk Management, the Safety Manager oversees driver compliance programs, accident investigation processes, OSHA compliance standards, and audit readiness initiatives. This position plays a critical role in protecting the organization's operating authority, reducing liability exposure, and strengthening overall safety performance across commercial transportation operations.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the implementation and continuous improvement of transportation safety and regulatory compliance programs in alignment with DOT, FMCSA, and OSHA requirements.
  • Ensure full compliance with driver qualification file (DQF) standards, hours-of-service (HOS) regulations, drug and alcohol testing programs, CSA performance metrics, and FMCSA reporting requirements.
  • Oversee monitoring systems to ensure compliance with ELD requirements, driver documentation, vehicle inspections, and maintenance regulatory standards.
  • Interpret regulatory changes and implement policy updates to maintain compliance with federal and state transportation and workplace safety laws.
  • Direct accident and incident investigation processes, ensuring thorough root cause analysis, accurate documentation, timely reporting, and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Oversee OSHA compliance programs, including injury and illness recordkeeping (OSHA 300 logs), hazard communication, workplace inspections, safety training, and regulatory response management.
  • Lead preparation efforts for DOT audits, OSHA inspections, and other regulatory reviews; serve as primary contact during audits in coordination with the Director of Risk Management.
  • Analyze safety performance data, CSA scores, incident trends, and claims data to identify systemic risks and implement data-driven mitigation strategies.
  • Oversee workers’ compensation claim coordination and return-to-work initiatives in partnership with Risk and third-party administrators.
  • Establish and enforce standards for chargeability determinations, ensuring consistency, fairness, and documentation integrity across incident review panels.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Operations, Maintenance, HR, and Legal to ensure regulatory alignment and proactive risk mitigation.
  • Assigning and overseeing regulatory compliance activities, investigations, audits, and reporting functions to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to federal and company standards.
  • Reviewing and approving investigative findings, corrective action plans, and regulatory documentation to ensure consistency and defensibility.
  • Monitoring team performance metrics related to driver compliance, audit readiness, incident reporting, and OSHA recordkeeping.
  • Conducting performance evaluations, providing ongoing coaching, and ensuring team members maintain current knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, and OSHA regulations.
  • Ensuring consistent application of company safety policies, chargeability determinations, and regulatory procedures across the team.
  • Supporting staff development, training, and succession planning to maintain a high‑performing compliance-focused safety department.
What We Need From You
  • Bachelor's Degree from a four-year college or university (Preferred).
  • 7-9 years progressive safety leadership experience within commercial trucking or logistics environments, with extensive knowledge of DOT regulations, FMCSA compliance requirements, commercial driver oversight, and OSHA standards, or equivalent combination of education and experience (Required).
  • 8-10+ years of progressive experience in transportation safety and regulatory compliance within commercial trucking, logistics, or fleet operations.
  • Extensive working knowledge of DOT and FMCSA regulations, including driver qualification files, hours‑of‑service compliance, drug & alcohol clearinghouse requirements, CSA scoring and intervention processes, ELD compliance.
  • Significant OSHA compliance expertise, including recordkeeping, workplace inspections, hazard assessments, and regulatory response.
  • Demonstrated experience leading DOT audits and OSHA inspections.
  • Strong analytical, investigative, and regulatory interpretation skills.
  • Proven leadership experience supervising safety or compliance personnel.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interface with regulatory agencies and executive leadership.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) (Preferred).
