Job summary

RR Donnelley & Sons is seeking a packaging design leader to guide the design staff, drive project prioritization, and ensure high-quality output for paper and non-paper packaging solutions. You will mentor teammates, interface with clients and sales, and oversee end-to-end design processes.

The role emphasizes collaboration across groups, delivering optimized packaging structures and compelling 3D renderings for client presentations. Strong ArtiosCAD and 3D skills are essential.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2-year Degree, or related experience.
• 5+ years in Packaging structural design.
• Able to analyze complex problems and identify critical elements.
• Must communicate clearly and courteously with stakeholders.
• Ability to mentor junior team members.
• Advanced knowledge of ArtiosCAD.
• SolidWorks / Rhino 3D experience a plus; Adobe CS and MS Office preferred.

Job Description

Manages and provides technical direction to Packaging platform design staff. Organizes processes, clarifies project priorities, and oversees design output on a daily basis.

• Oversee platform design team output, assign work to optimize output, and prioritize requests for all levels of design to ensure deliverables are met..
• Ensure consistent and efficient internal processes, workflows, and specifications are being used by all designers while effectively communicating changes and priorities to the design staff.
• Represent design group while interfacing with clients, sales, and other business platforms.
• Manage design projects through all stages of execution and maintain effective communication to sales, customer service, and manufacturing.
• Maintain clear organization of large ongoing projects involving many components and changes.
• Review work and provide effective, actionable feedback to the design team in a timely manner.
• Regularly interact directly with clients and sales to demonstrated added value in design while clearly communicating design reasoning as the packaging subject matter expert.
• Lead high-profile / high-priority client projects and initiatives.
• Ensure new designs are created for optimum efficiency for production and meet client testing standards and expectations.
• Develop structural design solutions for paper-based packaging (folding carton, corrugated, rigid box).
• Experience with non-paper packaging materials is a plus.
• Create 3D renderings including conceptual design, exploded-view schematics, and detailed assembly instructions
• Create high-end, flawless packaging prototypes for customer presentations.
• Work collaboratively and inclusively with design team members to identify and develop the best possible packaging solution while creating a positive work environment.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2-year Degree, or related experience.
• 5+ year of experience in Packaging structural design
• Able to apply broad work experience and knowledge when analyzing complex problems.
• Must be able consistently identify critical elements, variables and alternatives to develop solutions.
• Must be able to organize/prioritize existing resources and incorporate new information, as needed, to implement the most effective solutions.
• Able to communicate clearly and courteously with those who need to know of decisions/actions/problems.
• Excellent business acumen and collaborative skills when resolving problems.
• Able to mentor junior level team members in the use of tools and/or systems in the position.
• Requires excellent communication skills with ability to state messages in a clear manner by using language that is easy for others to understand.
• Able to explain programs policies and procedures in language that is understood by others.
• Must be able to modify communication style both formal and informal to match the appropriate level of the audience targeted.
• Requires strong understanding of the impact of a message on the organization or customer.
• Able to write with the clarity and precision necessary for the work being performed.
• Able to apply strong functional computer knowledge. Advanced knowledge of ArtiosCAD required.
• Basic knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft products preferred. Solidworks / Rhino 3D experience a plus.

Additional Information

RRD's current salary range for this role is $117,700 to $188,400 / year. The salary range may be adjusted based on the applicable geographic location of the hired employee, and the range may change in the future.At RRD, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions may vary based upon, but not limited to education, skills, experience, proficiency, performance, shift and location. Depending on the role, in addition to base salary, the total compensation package may also include participation in a bonus, commission or incentive program.
