POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
The Manager of Sustainability and Energy Management will play a vital role in developing, implementing, and managing sustainability initiatives across the Einstein College of Medicine campus, as well as managing energy resources. This position will be responsible for implementing sustainability programs and managing energy acquisition and utility management to align with the organization's environmental goals and commitments, while ensuring regulatory compliance.
Sustainability Program Management (25%)
- Implement and manage sustainability initiatives across the college
- Support the coordination of green teams and sustainability committees
- Engage with departments to identify and implement sustainability opportunities
- Track and report sustainability metrics and progress toward goals
- Support the development of the annual sustainability report
- Contribute to climate action and decarbonization planning
- Assist with sustainability education and awareness programs
Regulatory Compliance & Reporting (25%)
- Oversee compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations, including NYC Local Laws 84, 88, and 97
- Manage NYPA ReCharge NY program requirements
- Oversee NYSIF Climate Action Plan and NYCCarbon Challenge compliance
- Maintain Practice Greenhealth membership and reporting
- Prepare and submit required documentation for regulatory programs
- Manage carbon emissions tracking and reporting according to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol
- Oversee benchmarking and performance tracking in ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager
- Monitor compliance deadlines and ensure timely submission of reports
Energy Management & Acquisition (25%)
- Manage all aspects of energy acquisition, including electricity, natural gas, fuel oil, and water resources
- Develop and implement energy hedging strategies to optimize costs and reduce financial risk
- Monitor energy market trends and provide strategic recommendations for long-term contracts
- Coordinate with utility providers and maintain relationships with energy partners
- Create systems for tracking energy consumption, costs, and metrics
- Analyze utility bills for accuracy and identify cost-saving opportunities
- Manage interruptible gas service programs and ensure compliance with curtailment requirements
- Coordinate fuel oil procurement and delivery with building operators
Budgeting & Financial Management (15%)
- Support the development of utility budgets and forecasts
- Track expenses and perform variance analyses
- Manage energy accruals and coordinate utility accounting
- Identify and apply for energy incentives, rebates, and grants
- Prepare financial analyses for efficiency projects and initiatives
- Manage utility tax recovery programs and tenant billing
Project & Vendor Management (10%)
- Oversee energy efficiency and sustainability projects
- Coordinate with facilities teams on energy conservation measures
- Manage vendor and consultant relationships
- Support utility incentive applications for capital projects
- Coordinate building system optimization and commissioning activities
- Develop project justifications, track progress, and report outcomes
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Energy Management, Environmental Science, Sustainability, or related field
- 5+ years of experience in energy management, utility operations, or sustainability
- Experience with utility procurement and energy market analysis
- Knowledge of energy systems, utility billing, and data analysis
- Proficiency in Excel and other data analysis tools
- Experience with regulatory compliance related to energy and sustainability
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities independently
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in a related field
- Experience in healthcare or higher education settings
- Knowledge of NYC energy regulations and compliance
- Experience with ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager and energy systems
- Knowledge of greenhouse gas accounting and carbon management
- Professional certifications like CEM or LEED AP
- Familiarity with building automation and energy monitoring tools
- Experience with project management methodologies
