The SLAC IT Business Systems Manager provides strategic and operational leadership for SLAC ERP systems, ensuring reliable, secure, and scalable enterprise solutions while maintaining accountability for team performance and project execution.

You will lead a team of ERP analysts, developers, and architects, drive ERP roadmap, governance, incident response, and continuous improvement, partnering with HR, Finance, and other functions to achieve lab objectives.

Job description

The SLAC IT Business Systems Manager provides operational and technical leadership for SLAC ERP systems. This role is accountable for service quality, incident and request fulfillment performance, staff capability, and continual service improvement. The Manager serves as the senior escalation point for complex incidents and problems, ensuring stable operations, effective problem resolution, and a high-quality customer experience across all ERP services.

Leadership & People Management
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of ERP analysts, developers, architects, and technical specialists.
  • Establish performance expectations, provide coaching, and support professional growth and succession planning.
  • Hold team members accountable for deliverables, deadlines, quality standards, and organizational objectives.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, innovation, and customer service excellence.
  • Manage staffing, recruitment, workload prioritization, and resource allocation.
ERP Strategy & Governance
  • Develop and execute the technical roadmap for ERP platforms and related enterprise applications.
  • Ensure ERP solutions align with organizational goals, business processes, security requirements, and compliance standards.
  • Establish governance processes for application development, configuration, integrations, and change management.
  • Lead technology evaluations and recommend improvements to optimize ERP capabilities.
Technical Management
  • Oversee ERP system architecture, integrations, customizations, and upgrades.
  • Direct the design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance of ERP solutions.
  • Ensure application reliability, scalability, performance, and security.
  • Manage technical debt and implement modernization initiatives.
  • Review and approve technical designs and architectural decisions.
Project & Program Management
  • Lead complex ERP implementation, enhancement, and migration projects.
  • Manage project scope, budget, schedule, risks, and stakeholder communications.
  • Coordinate cross-functional teams, vendors, and consultants to deliver project outcomes.
  • Ensure successful adoption of new ERP capabilities through planning, training, and change management.
Operational Excellence
  • Establish service level objectives (SLOs) and monitor system performance and availability.
  • Oversee incident management, problem resolution, root cause analysis, and continuous service improvement.
  • Drive process automation and operational efficiencies across ERP functions.
  • Ensure timely resolution of production issues and escalations.
Risk, Security & Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies, regulatory requirements, and audit standards.
  • Partner with cybersecurity teams to maintain secure ERP environments.
  • Implement controls related to data integrity, access management, and business continuity.
  • Support audits and remediation of identified findings.
Stakeholder Engagement
  • Serve as the primary technical liaison between IT leadership and business stakeholders.
  • Translate business requirements into technical solutions and implementation strategies.
  • Present project status, risks, and recommendations to executive leadership.
  • Build strong partnerships across HR, Finance, Supply Chain, Procurement, and other ERP-supported functions.
Executive-Level Responsibility
  • Provides strategic and operational leadership for ERP technologies, ensuring the delivery of secure, reliable, and scalable enterprise solutions while maintaining accountability for team performance, project execution, service quality, and business outcomes.

Your specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide strategic direction for SLAC Business systems portfolio in partnership with the labs leadership. Provides technical subject matter expertise to business systems architecture, create strategic plans, set long-range direction and make high-level decisions, and oversees the implementation of complex and significant programmatic change.
  • Ensure SLAC’s business systems technology infrastructure serves the needs of the lab and priorities align with the overall vision and mission.
  • Advise lab leadership on technical futures.
  • Manage the adoption and adaptation of emerging technologies to meet changing requirements, capabilities, and opportunities.
  • Drive accountability across the team by setting clear expectations, monitoring performance, addressing gaps, and ensuring timely delivery of commitments and business objectives.
  • Lead technology modernization for ERP systems.
  • Lead and manage the daily operations of a technical unit, which may include recruiting, hiring, training, developing, evaluating and setting priorities; coordinate business, technical, and educational activities for direct reports.Evaluating services and proposing efficiencies to leadership.
  • Identify, clarify and resolve technical issues within own area; often serve as the initial managerial escalation point for problems from clients and other staff.
  • Communicate operational objectives and assignments and delegate to staff. Monitor and report on team performance metrics
  • Contribute to the development of plans to resolve business issues. Provide strategic planning for own work group; may assist higher level management in broader scope strategic planning.
  • Communicate and implement policies, procedures, best practices, recommendations and guidelines in compliance with established university policy and federal and state regulations.
  • Documentation:Oversee the Creation and updating of Knowledge Base articles and procedural documentation.
  • May develop and/or manage budgets for projects or work groups.
  • May establish service level agreements with clients.
  • Monitor technology trends and evaluate implementation plan for SLAC
  • Continue to evaluate need for services like IT Onboarding, and periodically review effectiveness.
