Job summary

The Shelter Association of Washtenaw County (SAWC) is seeking a Manager of Annual Giving to design, implement, and evaluate strategies that grow annual philanthropic support. Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, you will oversee the annual fund, campaigns, and grant-writing efforts, working with leadership to expand the donor base and revenue.

This in-person role primarily operates at SAWC’s office in Ann Arbor with an option for one remote workday per week, based on needs and approval.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3–5 years in fundraising, annual giving, or related development work.
  • Experience crafting donor appeals and grant proposals.
  • Excellent communication and attention to detail.

About Us:

Eight million Americans are one paycheck away from becoming homeless. In Washtenaw County, 5000 people are experiencing homelessness. The Shelter Association of Washtenaw County (SAWC) was established in 1982 and is the primary provider of services and emergency shelter for individuals in Washtenaw County. SAWC is housed at the Robert J. Delonis Center in downtown Ann Arbor. SAWC works with a diverse range of people struggling with homelessness, including first-time homelessness, veterans, domestic violence survivors, and people battling substance abuse and/or mental health issues. Services are offered through our core programs: Residential Emergency Shelter, Non-Residential Shelter, Shelter Diversion, Recuperative Care, and Winter Shelter. The SAWC serves almost 1500 people annually.

Position Profile:

The Manager of Annual Giving is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating strategies that grow annual philanthropic support. This position is supervised by the Chief Development Officer and oversees the annual fund, manages all appeal campaigns, and contributes to grant-writing efforts aligned with organizational priorities. The Manager of Annual Giving works closely with development leadership to strengthen donor engagement, expand the donor base, and ensure consistent revenue growth. The salary range for this position would be 60,000 - 70,000 annually.

Work Environment:

This position is primarily in-person at SAWC's Administrative office. The role includes the option for one remote workday per week, based on departmental needs and supervisor approval.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Plan, execute, and evaluate the organization’s annual giving program, including donor segmentation, moves management, targeted outreach, and stewardship strategies.
  • Develop and manage a comprehensive annual fund strategy to meet defined revenue goals.
  • Lead the creation and production of all annual giving appeals, including direct mail, email campaigns, digital fundraising, and coordinated multi-channel outreach.
  • Analyze donor data to measure campaign effectiveness, identify trends, and recommend improvements.
  • Collaborate with communications staff to ensure consistent messaging, strong storytelling, and compelling donor-centered content.
  • Collaborate with Community Partnership & Volunteer Specialist and Marketing & Events Specialist to ensure meaningful volunteer/donor engagement.
  • Oversee donor stewardship for annual fund supporters, ensuring timely acknowledgments and meaningful engagement.
  • Research, write, and submit grant proposals to foundations, corporations, and government entities as assigned and in partnership with Leadership Team
  • Track grant deadlines, reporting requirements, and submission schedules to ensure compliance and timely delivery in partnership with Leadership Team
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date donor and prospect records in the CRM system.
  • Support donor cultivation activities, including events, meetings, and personalized outreach.
  • Partner with internal teams to identify funding needs and develop persuasive cases for support.
  • Coordinate donor recognition and acknowledgment processes.
  • Work with finance to reconcile gifts and ensure accurate reporting.
  • Monitor trends in philanthropy and annual giving to incorporate best practices into program strategies.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor. This could be broadened to greater stakeholders like partners
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree required; relevant advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in fundraising, annual giving, or related development work.
  • Demonstrated success in managing giving programs or donor campaigns.
  • Strong written and verbal skills with experience in crafting appeals and grant proposals and communicating with donors.
  • Excellent project management abilities and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with CRM systems and donor databases. Experience with Bloomerang is an advantage.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and inform strategy.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple deadlines, and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Commitment to the mission, values, and goals of the organization.
  • CFRE credential preferred
