DSV is seeking an Ocean Export Manager (Pharma) in Itasca, IL. You will oversee the ocean export process, ensure regulatory compliance, and manage relationships with customers, vendors, and service providers.

The role focuses on pharmaceutical shipments, temperature-controlled handling, and documentation, driving efficiency and service quality. Ideal candidates have a bachelor’s in logistics and about 5 years in freight/logistics, with supervisory experience and knowledge of pharma shipping

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or related field.
  • 5 years of experience in freight forwarding, logistics, or related field.
  • Experience in ocean exports and supervisory roles is desirable.
  • Experience with pharmaceutical shipments preferred.
  • Knowledge of documented handling, regulatory requirements for pharma shipments.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee ocean export process, including shipping documents, customs clearance, and bookings.
  • Coordinate pharmaceutical shipments with appropriate handling and regulatory requirements.
  • Apply knowledge of temperature-sensitive cargo requirements to ensure safe shipments.
  • Coordinate with freight forwarders, shipping lines, and brokers to ensure delivery.
  • Lead and supervise ocean export coordinators and staff.

Summary

The Ocean Export Manager oversees the export process for ocean cargo, ensuring efficient and timely delivery while maintaining compliance with regulations. This role involves managing relationships with customers, vendors, and service providers to ensure a high level of service and customer satisfaction. The position also requires knowledge and understanding of the specialized requirements associated with pharmaceutical shipments, including appropriate handling, documentation, regulatory requirements, and transportation considerations applicable to pharmaceutical and other temperature-sensitive products.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Oversee the ocean export process, including preparation of shipping documents, customs clearance, and booking with shipping lines.
  • Oversee and coordinate pharmaceutical shipments, ensuring appropriate handling, documentation, transportation requirements, and adherence to applicable regulatory and customer requirements.
  • Apply knowledge of pharmaceutical and temperature-sensitive cargo requirements to support the safe, compliant, and timely movement of shipments.
  • Coordinate with freight forwarders, shipping lines, customs brokers, and other service providers to ensure efficient delivery.
  • Build and maintain relationships with customers, vendors, and third-party service providers.
  • Address and resolve customer inquiries promptly to maintain satisfaction and trust.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, including customs regulations and trade laws.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable requirements for pharmaceutical exports, including product handling, documentation, temperature-control, and transportation requirements.
  • Stay updated on changes in ocean freight regulations and export controls.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to improve efficiency and service quality.
  • Identify and execute process improvements to reduce costs and enhance customer satisfaction.
  • Monitor and report on key performance indicators, including cargo delivery times, costs, and service quality.
  • Analyze performance data to identify trends and areas for improvement.
Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervises a team of ocean export coordinators and support staff.

Educational background / Work experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related field is preferred.
  • 5 years of experience in freight forwarding, logistics, or a related field is preferred.
  • Prior experience in ocean exports and supervisory roles is highly desirable.
  • Experience handling pharmaceutical, healthcare, life sciences, temperature-sensitive, or other highly regulated shipments is preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the specialized documentation, handling, transportation, and regulatory requirements associated with pharmaceutical shipments.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with ocean freight regulations, customs requirements, and export controls.
  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical shipment requirements, including temperature-controlled transportation, product handling, documentation, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Experience coordinating pharmaceutical or other time- and temperature-sensitive cargo is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of shipping routes and schedules.

  • Experience with logistics and ocean cargo management systems.
Physical Demands

Work is generally sedentary, with no specific need for physical coordination or effort. May require physical effort associated with using the computer to access information, or occasional standing, walking, lifting needed to carry out everyday activities. Hours can be extensive as well as occasionally staggered for multi-shift access. While performing the duties of this job, the employee uses his/her hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, or crouch; talk or hear. The employee uses computer and telephone equipment. Specific vision requirements of this job include close vision and distance vision. Minimal travel may be required for this role domestically and internationally.

For this position, the expected base pay range is $90k - $115k. Actual compensation will be determined based on job-related factors such as relevant experience, skills, education, certifications, and geographic location, in accordance with applicable laws and company policy.
