Job summary

Road Commission for Oakland County seeks a Director of Highway Maintenance to lead headquarters staff, oversee maintenance operations, and ensure alignment with board policies. The role emphasizes technical expertise, safety, and cost-conscious decision-making in a public agency setting.

The ideal candidate has a civil engineering background, PE preferred, with at least five years supervising highway construction or maintenance programs and a valid Michigan driver's license.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in civil or construction engineering or related field.
• Minimum five years progressive experience managing highway construction and design/maintenance operations with supervisory responsibility.
• Professional Engineer license in Michigan preferred.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and coordinate the maintenance headquarters staff and activities.
• Provide expertise in maintenance methods and assist budget control.
• Make independent decisions per RCOC board policies.
• Stay updated on highway maintenance techniques.
• Occasionally serve as Director in the absence and attend Board meetings.
• Address concerns from citizens and officials.
• Promote a professional image of the road commission.
• Maintain a schedule aligned with RCOC hours.
• Ensure regular on-site attendance.

Job description

Job Duties: Under the direct supervision of the Director, Highway Maintenance:

• Serves as supervisor/coordinator of the RCOC maintenance headquarters staff and its activities.
• Provides expertise and instruction in the proper methods/materials used in maintenance operations and assist in the budgetary control of operations.
• Makes independent decisions based on RCOC board policies.
• Must stay abreast of new techniques and procedures related to highway maintenance operations.
• May serve occasionally as Director of Highway Maintenance in the Director’s absence, including attending Board meetings.
• Frequently addresses concerns from citizens and community officials.
• Must perform duties in a professional and courteous manner to promote a positive image of the road commission for Oakland County.
• Requires a daily schedule that supports RCOC hours of operation.
• Regular and predictable onsite job attendance is an essential function of this position.

Special Experience / Education:

• A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction engineering, or degree in a similar field, from an accredited college or university.
• A minimum of five (5) years of progressively more responsible experience in managing highway construction and design/maintenance operations, which involves the supervision of employees.
• A Professional Engineer (PE) license from the State of Michigan, is preferred.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan Driver’s License is required.
