About the role and team

Leading at Uber means setting direction in motion, not waiting for perfect conditions. As an Engineering Manager II, you will be a primary engine for high-growth technical organizations, bridging the gap between bold ideas and real-world impact for millions of users. You’ll lead high-performing teams in an environment that values ownership over hierarchy and measurable impact over process.

This is a high-visibility leadership role that requires a manager who stays calm in the “messy” reality of scaling one of the world’s most complex technical platforms. You will move fluidly between high-level strategic vision and relentless operational execution, making hard calls on prioritization and navigating competing global priorities. If you lead with clarity, build with heart, and are motivated by solving massive organizational and technical puzzles at scale – this is where you’ll make your mark.

What you’ll do

  • Manage, coach, and grow a diverse team of engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, accountability, and continuous learning.

  • Define and execute ambitious roadmaps in collaboration with cross-functional partners to deliver high-impact features and platforms.

  • Lay out the technical vision for your area, participating in deep-dive architectural designs for scalable distributed systems or core applications.

  • Drive execution and delivery of complex projects in ambiguous environments, ensuring systems are built in a sustainable and scalable way.

  • Establish and uphold best practices for code quality, system reliability, and engineering fundamentals metrics.

  • Act as a critical bridge across the company, communicating technical insights and roadmaps to leadership and global partners to align on shared goals.

Basic Qualifications

  • 8+ years of total experience in software engineering with at least 2-3 years directly managing engineering teams.

  • Proven ability to translate company direction into a strategic mission rooted in primary customer needs.

  • Experience providing clarity to both direct and dependent teams to maintain productivity and alignment on deliverables.

  • Track record of building inclusive teams with the right mix of skills and seniority to deliver against business needs.

  • Experience driving operational excellence through the review of metrics, incidents, and post-mortems for continuous improvement.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience influencing the vision and roadmaps of partner teams to build strategic alignment across the organization.

  • High technical depth in building and scaling distributed systems, machine learning applications, or global platforms.

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with a proven ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences.

  • Demonstrated ability to identify and drive changes for the greater good of Uber, even when at odds with immediate team interests.
