Group Underwriting Operations Analyst

Hybrid position based in Brooklyn, OH, requiring 4 days on-site per week.

Job Summary

Manages the Underwriting Operations department which supports the large group underwriting units that prepare new business prospect quotes and renewals for existing business. Ensures adequate systems, tools, policies, and training to aid the business area to contribute to corporate sales and profitability initiatives.

Responsibilities
  • Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of underwriting techniques, adherence to regulations and policies, and group underwriting performance results in support of growth and profitability targets. Perform audits in accordance with executive and internal audit requirements.
  • Provides continued development and maintenance of automated rating systems including formulas, data and billing interfaces, customer outputs, calculations & results. Ensures and coordinates all factors and tools needed for underwriting are appropriately implemented.
  • Produces appropriate reporting for corporate meetings, sales/service and management, analytics and modeling, and special studies as needed.
  • Reviews, monitors and executes off standard negotiation and approval policies.
  • Assists in training and development of underwriters related to underwriting techniques, procedures and policies, systems and tools, legal requirements, and reviews/controls and approvals.
  • Collaborates with other departments including sales/service, actuarial, finance, legal, internal audit, provider contracting, and care management to ensure appropriate coordination of elements impacting pricing are properly recognized.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Business, Finance or related field, Master's degree preferred.
  • 8 years progressive experience in health insurance underwriting and business systems, or equivalent financial services or related experience, 3 years of which are in a high-level individual contributor or leadership capacity.

Technical Skills and Knowledge:

  • In depth knowledge of underwriting techniques, funding mechanisms, and health benefit plans, experience rating of new and renewal business, and multiple lines of business.
  • Advanced Microsoft Office (particularly spreadsheet and database applications) and health insurance underwriting system skills
