Job summary

Artis BioSolutions is seeking a Manager of Environmental Health & Safety to lead the organization’s EHS programs across manufacturing, quality, facilities, and R&D. You will partner with multiple teams to ensure a safe, compliant workplace and support cGMP operations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health & Safety or related field.
• 5-8 years of progressive EHS experience, preferably in biotech/pharma or regulated environments.
• Knowledge of OSHA, EPA, Massachusetts environmental and workplace safety requirements; federal/state/local regs.
• Experience supporting laboratory, manufacturing, and/or cGMP environments is preferred.
• Experience developing and implementing EHS programs, policies, procedures, and training.
• Experience conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, and corrective actions.
• Professional certifications such as CSP, CIH, CHMM, ASP or similar preferred but not required.

• Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DEP and other regs across the organization.
• Conduct safety inspections, risk assessments, JHAs/JSAs, and ergonomic evaluations; recommend corrective actions.
• Manage incident reporting, investigation, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.
• Develop and deliver EHS training programs including new-hire orientation and contractor training.
• Manage hazardous materials, chemical safety, hazardous waste, and biosafety programs.
• Oversee biosafety risk assessments and coordination with institutional biosafety processes.
• Maintain Safety Data Sheets, chemical inventories, PPE, and safety programs.
• Partner with Facilities and Engineering on emergency preparedness and life safety initiatives.
• Support biosafety and lab safety for biotech and advanced therapy operations.
• Coordinate emergency response planning, drills, and business continuity safety activities.
• Facilitate safety committees and promote employee engagement in safety initiatives.
• Manage occupational health/safety requirements and coordinate with HR on workers' compensation and return-to-work.

Job description

The Manager, Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) is responsible for leading and managing environmental, health, safety, and occupational safety programs across the organization. This role partners closely with Manufacturing, Quality, Facilities, Engineering, Process Development, Research, and other functional teams to maintain a safe and compliant workplace while supporting cGMP operations. The EHS Manager will develop and implement programs, policies, training, and systems designed to minimize workplace risk, ensure regulatory compliance, and promote a strong culture of safety.

Responsibilities

• Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of company-wide EHS programs, policies, procedures, and training.
• Serve as the primary EHS subject matter expert and partner with site leadership and functional teams to identify, assess, and mitigate workplace hazards.
• Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations and requirements, including OSHA, EPA, DEP, and other applicable agencies.
• Conduct workplace safety inspections, risk assessments, job hazard analyses (JHAs/JSAs), and ergonomic evaluations and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
• Manage incident reporting, investigation, root cause analysis, corrective actions, and follow-up for workplace injuries, near misses, spills, and other safety events.
• Develop, coordinate, and deliver EHS training programs, including new-hire orientation, contractor training, respiratory protection, role‑specific training, and web-based options covering relevant regulatory topics.
• Manage hazardous materials, chemical safety, hazardous waste, biological safety, and related environmental compliance programs.
• Oversee biosafety programs, including risk assessments for biological materials, biosafety level determinations, and coordination with institutional biosafety processes as applicable.
• Maintain and oversee Safety Data Sheets, chemical inventories, hazard communication, PPE requirements, and laboratory and manufacturing safety programs.
• Partner with Facilities and Engineering on emergency preparedness, fire and life safety, contractor safety, equipment safety, and facility‑related EHS initiatives.
• Support biosafety and laboratory safety programs appropriate for biotechnology and advanced therapy operations.
• Coordinate emergency response planning, drills, evacuation procedures, and business continuity‑related safety activities.
• Facilitate safety committees and promote employee engagement in safety initiatives.
• Manage occupational health and safety requirements and coordinate with HR and external partners as appropriate for workers' compensation and return‑to‑work matters.
• Track, analyze, and report EHS metrics, trends, incidents, and corrective actions to leadership; maintain a compliance calendar and required EHS records, permits, documentation, and regulatory reporting.
• Support internal and external audits, regulatory inspections, and client or partner assessments related to EHS.
• Partner with Quality and operational teams to ensure EHS requirements are appropriately integrated into cGMP activities and change management processes.
• Manage external EHS consultants, service providers, and vendors as needed.
• Advance a proactive safety culture through best practices, employee engagement activities, sustainability initiatives, continuous improvement of EHS programs, and identification of operational efficiencies.
• Remain current on changes to EHS regulations and industry best practices and recommend updates to company programs as needed.
• Perform other EHS‑related responsibilities and projects as assigned.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Life Sciences, or a related field required; advanced degree preferred.
• Approximately 5-8 years of progressive EHS experience, preferably within biotechnology, pharmaceutical, life sciences, manufacturing, laboratory, or other regulated environments.
• Working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, Massachusetts environmental and workplace safety requirements, and other applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
• Experience supporting laboratory, manufacturing, and/or cGMP environments strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated experience developing and implementing EHS programs, policies, procedures, and employee training.
• Experience conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action planning.
• Knowledge of hazardous materials management, hazardous waste, chemical safety, emergency response, and occupational safety programs.
• Strong project management, organizational, and documentation skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Strong interpersonal and influencing skills with the ability to partner effectively with employees and leaders across all levels of the organization.
• Ability to communicate complex regulatory and safety requirements clearly and practically.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently while operating effectively in a highly collaborative, fast‑paced environment.
• Professional certifications such as CSP, CIH, CHMM, ASP, or similar credentials are preferred but not required.

Physical / Work Requirements

• This is an on‑site position requiring regular presence in laboratory, manufacturing, office, and facility environments.
• Ability to conduct facility inspections and respond to safety‑related matters throughout the site.
• May require occasional work outside normal business hours to support incidents, emergency response, training, or operational needs.
