Job description

Job Description

Garner's mission is to transform the healthcare economy, delivering high quality and affordable care for all. By helping employers restructure their healthcare benefits to provide clear incentives and data-driven insights, we guide employees to higher quality and lower cost healthcare providers. The result is better health outcomes for patients and a reward system for doctors practicing well, not performing more procedures. Backed by top-tier venture capital firms, we are growing rapidly and expanding our team.

We are seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the team responsible for systems that generate Garner's healthcare provider rankings. The ideal candidate should have a strong sense of ownership, experience mentoring engineers of all levels, expertise with distributed systems, and the ability to deliver complex technical solutions reliably. This role reports to the VP of Health Intelligence Engineering. It is a hybrid role requiring up to 3 days per week in Garner's New York City office.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Providing technical oversight and driving new features aligned with Garner's strategic mission
  2. Building a high-performance team through mentoring, feedback, and hiring
  3. Maintaining quality while ensuring fast delivery
  4. Balancing greenfield development with scaling existing systems
  5. Collaborating across disciplines to identify bottlenecks, propose mitigations, and communicate tradeoffs
  6. Ensuring user privacy and security through best practices

Ideal candidates will have:

  1. 7+ years of hands-on engineering experience, focusing on big data and distributed systems
  2. 3+ years in engineering leadership, translating business requirements into scalable solutions and features
  3. Expertise with batch data processing frameworks like Hadoop, Spark, EMR
  4. Knowledge of big data technologies such as Argo, Apache Iceberg, AWS Glue, Spark, Metaflow, DBT, Soda
  5. Strong leadership skills to motivate, mentor, and retain top talent
  6. Proven influence without authority, driving process improvements and architecture enhancements
  7. Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP)
  8. Knowledge of healthcare data standards (HIPAA, EDI) is highly desirable
  9. A proactive problem-solving mindset and ownership attitude
  10. Willingness to 'roll up sleeves' to ensure success
  11. Experience in a fast-paced startup environment
  12. A passion for improving the U.S. healthcare system

What we value at Garner:

  • Mission First: Our goal is to transform healthcare to deliver high-quality, affordable care for all.
  • Expect Extraordinary: We aim for exceptional results, pushing ourselves beyond comfort zones.
  • Courageous Communication: Transparency and honesty are essential, even when uncomfortable.
  • Supportive Community: We believe people work best when supported and cared for, making work more enjoyable.

The target salary range for this position is: $220,000 - $250,000. Compensation depends on qualifications and skills. The role includes equity incentives and benefits.
