- Responsible for the maintenance of efficient and effective departmental operations.
- Monitor productivity, case mix and benchmark data to ensure that the staffing requirements are planned, appropriate and consistent.
- Facilitates and ensures smooth coordination of department services with other nursing units and departments.
- Responsible for monitoring and assessing associate developmental needs to ensure competency.
- Coordinate the selection process. Monitor associate turnover and vacancy and develop and implement recruitment and retention strategies.
- Conduct unit meetings to improve communication of financial and operational information as well as strategic planning.
- Routinely review patient satisfaction data, reward and recognize associates who are achieving results.
- Implement strategies to assure that all associates understand and support organizational standards of behavior, methods for communicating key messages and methods which serve to increase patient satisfaction.
- Achieve goals established by system and site regarding patient satisfaction.
- Provide supervision of associates and accept accountability for services provided on the unit.
- Consistently round on associates to role model positive behaviors, monitor morale, follow-up on organizational initiatives, reduce barriers between administration and staff and improve associate retention.
- Follow established processes for receiving and resolving employee complaints and concerns.
- Model service and leadership consistent with nursing and organizational strategic goals.
- Involve associates in short and long term unit planning and analysis of needs of unit associates.
- Actively participate in physician meetings and committees as assigned.
- Collaborate with physicians and members of other departments and disciplines in the development, implementation and evaluation of programs and services to meet the needs of the unit population.
- Ensure financial targets are met.
- Participate in budget planning in collaboration with the department director and advocate for appropriate fiscal and human resources to accomplish the work and goals of the nursing department.
- Monitor unit productivity levels, monthly operational reports, budget variance reports, and workforce design to ensure proper resource utilization and role delineation.
- Identify areas for improved operational efficiency and involve associates in the development of new processes as appropriate.
- Initiate cost containment activities, as appropriate.
- Responsible for maintaining clinical excellence while monitoring and implementing improvement initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with IDPH, Accrediting Organization, and other licensing/accrediting bodies and agencies.
- Analyze and use benchmarkable data from internal and external sources to identify opportunity improvements.
- Support staff participation of quality improvement activities through established systems and through advisory councils and clinical quality committees.
- Assist and support staff in developing and maintaining competency through orientation, internships, educational offerings, workshops, interdisciplinary professional meetings and self-directed learning. Maintain and analyze data to assure that staff development activities offered on the unit is of high quality and meet the needs of unit staff.
- Foster a climate conductive to educational experiences for associates and students.
- Create a non-punitive culture of patient safety adherent to national patient safety initiatives.
- Maintenance of personal professional growth and development.
- Actively participate in hospital committees, meetings and projects.
- Attend workshops, seminars and professional activities to identify future trends in healthcare and opportunities for growth.
- Network with professionals at other health care facilities for clinical standards and innovations.
- Research literature, identify best practices, engage physicians in planning activities.

Licensure, Registration, And/or Certification Required
- Current RN Licensure in State of Illinois
- BLS certification
Education Required
- Bachelor of Nursing Degree
Experience Required
- 2+ years of previous management experience focused in surgical services
- 4+ years of clinical RN experience in a surgical services setting.
- RN Licensure in State of Illinois.

Physical Requirements And Working Conditions
- If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
