Job summary

The Doctors Company is seeking a Manager, Alternative Risk Underwriting to oversee a hybrid role based at any TDCG or PRA office. The Doctors Company is seeking a Manager Alternative Risk Underwriting. This is a hybrid opportunity based at any TDCG or PRA office.

The Underwriting Manager, Alternative Risk is responsible for the profitable growth, retention, and overall management of a complex portfolio of alternative risk accounts within TDC. This position has direct accountability for $80 million in annual premium volume and $5 million in fronting and claims handling fee revenue.

The ideal candidate is a highly experienced underwriting professional with deep expertise in alternative risk structures, medical professional liability insurance, captive and self-insured programs, and complex client relationship management. This individual will operate with significant autonomy, serving as the primary business leader for their portfolio while partnering with internal stakeholders to deliver exceptional underwriting, financial, and service results.

The role requires a strategic, disciplined, and commercially driven leader who can independently manage a sophisticated book of business with limited oversight from the Vice President, Alternative Risk Programs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Finance, Business, Insurance, or a related field.
  • CPCU, RPLU, ARM, ARe, or other relevant insurance designation preferred.
  • 10+ years of commercial insurance underwriting experience, with significant expertise in alternative risk programs and/or medical professional liability insurance.
  • Demonstrated success managing large, complex insurance programs with substantial premium volume and profitability accountability.
  • Experience managing other underwriters and analysts.
  • Experience with captives, self-insurance structures, risk retention groups, fronting arrangements, and large deductible programs.
  • Proven ability to independently manage high-profile client relationships and renewal negotiations.
  • Experience analyzing underwriting, financial, actuarial, and claims information to support business decisions.
  • Deep knowledge of medical professional liability insurance and alternative risk financing mechanisms.
  • Strong understanding of underwriting principles, pricing methodologies, collateral structures, and program performance metrics.
  • Advanced analytical, financial, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Exceptional negotiation, relationship management, and communication skills.

Underwriting & Risk Assessment

  • Independently evaluate and underwrite complex alternative risk opportunities, including captives, risk retention groups, self-insured trusts, large deductible programs, and fronted arrangements.
  • Assess financial, operational, actuarial, and claims-related factors impacting program performance.
  • Establish appropriate pricing, terms, conditions, limits, and collateral requirements.
  • Ensure underwriting decisions align with corporate risk appetite, profitability expectations, and regulatory requirements.
  • Exercise sound judgment with disciplined risk selection.
  • Provide solutions to existing MPL customers when required.

Client & Broker Relationship Management

  • Serve as the senior business relationship leader for assigned clients, brokers, consultants, and program administrators.
  • Build trusted partnerships with executive-level client stakeholders.
  • Lead renewal negotiations and oversee the development of customized program solutions.
  • Maintain a high level of client engagement to support retention and identify growth opportunities.
  • Represent the company in client meetings, industry forums, conferences, and strategic business discussions.

Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Collaborate closely with actuarial, claims, finance, legal, compliance, risk management, and operations teams to optimize program performance.
  • Lead discussions regarding claims trends, collateral management, and program structure.
  • Coordinate service delivery to ensure client expectations are met or exceeded.
  • Act as the primary internal advocate and decision-maker for assigned accounts.

Strategic & Business Leadership

  • Provide thought leadership regarding market trends, competitive dynamics, and emerging risks impacting the medical professional liability marketplace.
  • Participate in the development of alternative risk strategies and business initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities for business solutions within existing accounts and targeted prospects.
  • Assist in refining underwriting guidelines, program structures, and best practices.
  • Mentor junior underwriting staff and contribute to the development of organizational underwriting expertise.

Salary Range: $124,548 - $163,879. Compensation varies based on skills, knowledge, and education. We consider factors such as specialized skills, depth of knowledge in the field, and educational background to ensure fair and competitive pay. Salary may include additional geographic differential for employees working in higher-cost labor markets, including states such as New York and California.
