Job summary

Harper College in Palatine, IL, seeks an experienced administrator to lead the front office and the assistive technology lab within Access and Disability Services. You will hire, train, supervise, and evaluate staff, coordinate schedules, and ensure excellent, student-centered service.

You will oversee disability management software (AIM), help develop procedures, monitor budgets, and collaborate with faculty to provide accommodations.

Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Higher Education, Disability Services, Counseling, Administration, or related field.
  • managerial experience in Disability Services, preferably in postsecondary setting.
  • Knowledge of disability laws (Rehab Act, ADA, ADAAA) required.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Conversational American Sign Language is desirable.

  • Assist staff development programs related to accommodations and Universal Design.
  • Manage institutional, grant, and donated resources; support financial and operational reports for grants.
  • Support annual program reviews, End of Year data reporting, and ICCB/IBHE submissions.
  • Participate in college/divisional committees and other duties as assigned.

Manages and directs the daily work and future directions of the operational and accommodation components. Responsible for the operation of disability management software. Assists in developing, revising and implementing procedures and standards; monitors and recommends budget proposals and staffing patterns needed to meet department/College objectives; and provides consultation related to the academic and physical accommodation needs for students. Stays abreast of current state and federal legislation related to disability access, assistive technology, and trends in the field of postsecondary disability services.

Assists in developing, revising and implementing procedures and standards; monitors and recommends budget proposals and staffing patterns needed to meet department/College objectives; and provides consultation related to the academic and physical accommodation needs for students. Stays abreast of current state and federal legislation related to disability access, assistive technology, and trends in the field of postsecondary disability services.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Provides administrative leadership to the front office and assistive technology lab in Access and Disability Services.

  • Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates front office and assistive technology lab staff, interpreters, speech-to-text transcribers, and student employees to provide excellent, student centered customer service. Develops and coordinates staff schedules to ensure appropriate coverage of the office.

  • Responsible for the operation of disability management software (AIM) and ensures that the student data and documentation is stored properly.

  • Consults with faculty and other campus administrative areas to facilitate students’ disability related services and academic adjustments.

  • Troubleshoots common departmental problems that arise, and coordinates problem solving and resolution related to reasonable accommodations.

  • Assists with dissemination of staff and faculty development programs related to accommodations, campus access, and Universal Design.

  • In collaboration with the Director, manages institutional, grant, and donated fiscal resources to maximize services in ADS. Collaborates with the Director to complete and validate financial and operational reports to meet the requirements of grant-funded programs and the internal budget.

  • Assists with the evaluation of effective services/programs in alignment with the College’s Strategic Plan by coordinating the collection of data and outcomes related to accommodations.

  • Assists with conducting an annual analysis (End of Year report), data reporting to the ICCB/IBHE, and periodic Program Reviews (every five years).

  • Assists in developing standards, procedures, budget and staffing recommendations for ADS in conjunction with the Director.

  • Participates in college and divisional committees as appropriate.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Supervision:

Under the general supervision of the Director, Disability Services. Supervises staff in the ADS front office and assistive technology lab


Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

Work is primarily indoor and sedentary in nature.


Equipment/Tools Used:

Utilizes standard office equipment, including computers, in order to perform the duties of the job.


Minimum Acceptable Qualifications


  • Education: Masters’ Degree in Higher Education, Disability Services, Counseling, Administration, or related field.

  • Experience: Previous managerial experience in Disability Services, with a preference for postsecondary experience. Working experience in providing direct services or accommodations. Knowledge of disability laws and regulations (Rehab Act, ADA, ADAAA, and state regulations). Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills is required. Conversational American Sign Language fluency is desired.
