A leading health system in Richmond is seeking a Mammography Technologist to perform diagnostic imaging procedures. The role requires effective patient communication and adherence to safety standards. Candidates must have relevant certifications and experience in breast imaging.

The practice of mammography is performed by radiologic technologists who have initially met the qualifications to administer ionizing radiation. The technologist must subsequently have met the federal mammography training requirements as specified in the Mammography Quality Standards Act of 1992 (MQSA). A mammography technologist performs radiographic procedures and related techniques, producing images at the request of and for interpretation by a licensed independent practitioner. Mammography integrates scientific knowledge, technical skills, patient interaction, and compassionate care to obtain viable diagnostic information. A mammography technologist recognizes patient conditions essential for successful completion of a procedure.
Radiographers must demonstrate an understanding of breast anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology. Mammography technologists must comprehend the complexities of the federal regulations to meet the minimum standards for the performance of mammography. They must have knowledge of quality assurance policies and quality control testing for digital mammography. Mammography technologists must maintain a high degree of accuracy in breast positioning, exposure techniques, and evaluation of imaging parameters to optimize patient imaging and care while adhering to radiation protection and safety standards.
Mammography technologists serve as the primary liaison between patients, licensed independent practitioners, and other support team members. They must be sensitive to the physical and emotional needs of patients through effective communication, assessment, and monitoring. Participation in quality improvement processes and continuous performance assessment is expected.
**Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:**
- ARRT-R
- ARRT-M
**Requirements for Continued Employment:**
- Current ARRT Certification in Radiography and Mammography
- BLS for Healthcare Providers
**Experience:**
- REQUIRED: 1 year as Breast Imaging Technologist
- PREFERRED: 1-3 years, experience in an academic medical center
**Education/Training:**
- REQUIRED: Graduation from a JRC Accredited Radiologic Technology Program recognized by ARRT
- PREFERRED: Bachelor’s Degree in Radiologic Technology or related field
**Independent Action:** Utilizes professional judgment to obtain diagnostic information, following policies and standards. Performs screening and diagnostic mammography independently as per policies and directives.
**Additional Requirements:**
- Shift rotation and schedules as determined by management.
- May require weekend and after-hours coverage.
- Considered an essential employee.
**Physical and Other Requirements:**
- Lifting 20-50 lbs.
- Activities include standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motions, computer interaction.
- Sensory and mental skills include recall, reasoning, hearing, vision, and problem-solving.
- Environment may be fast-paced, noisy, with frequent changes.
